Chinese Qixi Valentines Day Celebration
Event description
To celebrate Multicultural Queensland Month, we are hosting a vibrant community event to honour the traditional Chinese Qixi Festival, also known as Chinese Valentine’s Day. This celebration will take place on Thursday evening at Mount Pleasant Shopping Centre, creating an engaging and accessible opportunity for the broader community to learn about and participate in Chinese culture.
The event will feature interactive cultural activities for all ages. Attendees will enjoy storytelling of the ancient love tale between Zhinu and Niulang, central to the Qixi Festival. Participants can also join hands-on craft sessions to make traditional red love knots and magpie origami—symbols of love and reunion. A language station will offer fun phrase learning around themes of love and friendship, complemented by a calligraphy experience where people can try writing meaningful Chinese characters.
The event will also include a themed photo booth for keepsake moments, as well as a food and tea tasting area showcasing traditional treats and jasmine tea. This event aims to promote cultural appreciation, build community connection, and create a welcoming space for all to celebrate diversity and shared values through love, art, and storytelling.
