TITLE: Lecturing on education: Immanuel Kant's use of pedagogy in his philosophy
ABSTRACT: During his tenure as a professor at the University of Königsberg, the moral philosopher Immanuel Kant also gave several lectures on pedagogy. On the one hand, he was complying with requirements set by the Prussian government; on the other hand, he had developed a genuine interest in educational issues ever since reading Rousseau’s "Émile". This lecture sheds light on Kant’s interest in educational processes and discusses the indispensable role that pedagogy played in his philosophy at a time when education was being established as a science in Prussia.

Jürgen Overhoff (Münster)
Jürgen Overhoff is professor of the history of education at the Universität Münster, where he directs the Working Group for German-American Educational History. Educated in Berlin, London, and Cambridge, he specializes in the Enlightenment and transatlantic educational history. His previously published books include a monograph on the political thought of Thomas Hobbes and a biography of Benjamin Franklin, alongside studies of Johann Bernhard Basedow, philanthropinism, and Frederick the Great. From 2018 to 2022 he served as president of the German Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies. His latest book, "George Washington and Frederick the Great: Parallel Lives" was published with Princeton University Press in 2026.
