Program Notes:
Chopin's works sit firmly in the piano repertoire as a staple of romanticism, elegance and virtuosity. The characteristically Polish inspiration of his works, and their association with love and emotion are exemplified in the selection of works presented in this program. It features moments of unbridled explosivity and virtuosity, balanced (and often starkly so) by subdued, simple melodies that speak to the soul.
The program seeks to illustrate the evolution of Chopin's style, from an ethereal melodic Nocturne, to the evolution of the then novel Ballade form. The program then moves on to the fractured Polonaise Fantasy, and concludes with a contrasting polonaise of remarkable proportions from his early period.
