Event description

Protect Our Winters and Further Faster present Downstream panel chat and film night.

What: Join other members of the outdoor community for a screening of the full Downstream documentary, followed by a panel discussion with scientists, athletes, and businesses on the impacts of glacier recession and the importance of collective action and systemic change.

Joining us will be an amazing crew of outdoor lovers and experts to help shed some light on Glacier change, and what we can do to help slow it down.

Alistair McDowell

A mountain enthusiast of all types, Alastair enjoys moving in the mountains with the seasons - mountain running, ski-mountaineering, and classical mountaineering. His favourite styles are long expeditions and single-day speed ascents - both ends of the spectrum. Whether long immersions, or rapid ascents, he appreciates the variety of interconnected ecosystems that one moves through from valley to summit and learning how to adapt oneself to moving across different terrain, in different seasons, with different challenges.

Dr Heather Purdie

Dr Heather Purdie is an Associate Professor and glaciologist in the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Canterbury. Also a mountaineer, Heather has spent much time exploring the mountains of Aotearoa |New Zealand, and has been monitoring glaciers for two decades. Her research focuses on how glaciers respond to climate change and the implications of glacier recession on mountain recreation and tourism.

Dr Shane Orchard

Shane is a hydro-ecologist and conservation scientist working at intersection of biogeography and socio-ecology. He is also author of the Backcountry Ski-Touring in New Zealand guidebook and a long-time snowboarder with a passion for remote alpine journeys in the mountains. Over his time in the Southern Alps he has seen many changes in the snowpack, glaciers and terrain features and studied public access and accessibility changes in the headwaters and river valleys. Further downstream his current work is combining oral histories and remote sensing to track changes in river systems and coastal lagoons and even further out to sea in the Tau ki Ākau (ridge to reef) programme . Shane will share some thought-provoking examples of downstream effects that are linked to glaciers, plus some beta on route changes!

Anna Scheirlinck -

Team Leader of LandSAR Alpine Rescue Canterbury. Risk management at both operational and strategic levels. Experienced facilitator of leadership development programs for the NZ Defence Force, with a focus on self-awareness, resilience and team dynamics. Emergency management for disaster preparedness, response and recovery. Outdoor Instructor and Backcountry Ski Guide. When I'm not at a desk you'll find me in the mountains. Constantly curious and open to new challenges. Anna is also the Operations Manager at the new Boulder Co here in Christchurch.
