Event description

Contemporary Ikebana

Explore a fresh, avant-garde approach to this traditional Japanese art form with the Sogetsu School of Ikebana

Guided by contemporary techniques, we’ll explore a modern, avant-garde approach to this traditional Japanese art form—emphasising simplicity, balance, and expressive design.

Whether you're a beginner or have experience with floristry, this 2-hour session in the Kiosk offers a fresh perspective on working with flowers as a creative, meditative practice.

Led by Mary Fulton and an additional two qualified Ikebana tutors, dedicated step-by-step guidance will be provided, ensuring you gain the confidence and skill to create a balanced composition.

This workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore the art of Ikebana, create your own inspiring piece, and take home your very own arrangement in a purpose-designed ceramic dish.

Led by Mary Fulton and tutors from the Sogetsu Teachers Association (chch branch)

Sogetsu Ikebana, founded by Sofu Teshigahara in 1927, revolutionises traditional Japanese flower arranging by embracing a modern, avant-garde approach. It encourages creativity and individuality, allowing practitioners to create sculptural arrangements and utilise unconventional materials.

In 2014 Mary attended a memorial Ikebana exhibition by the Christchurch Sogetsu Branch for Japanese students who lost their lives in the Christchurch earthquake.

“I was in awe of the beauty and the way the art form honoured the tragic event by expressing feelings of sadness and loss in the arrangements.”

Thus began her ikebana study and she has now completed the formal curriculum obtaining her Sogetsu Teachers diploma.

Inclusions

As part of this special Ikebana experience, each participant will receive a hand-crafted ceramic dish created by renowned local ceramicist Jane McCulla (valued at $120), paired with a professional-grade metal kenzan. These beautiful, lasting tools ensure your floral creations continue long after the workshop ends.
