Description

This course is designed for CHWs/THWs, providing an overview of foundational breast health and breast cancer information, along with the continuum of community-based support offered by Pink Lemonade Project. Participants will get an overview of breast health, screening guidelines, possible symptoms, and then breast cancer statistics, risk and protective factors, types of different breast cancers, staging, and health inequities, with attention to current trends affecting younger women, rural communities, and communities of color. The course emphasizes the role of trusted CHWs/THWs in supporting people through screening, diagnosis, treatment, and metastatic breast cancer; highlighting culturally responsive and patient-centered approaches that CHWs can take to support individuals and families. Learners will also be given an overview of Pink Lemonade Project’s programs and services, equipping participants with knowledge and local resources to better support people in their communities.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand basic breast health and breast cancer concepts, including risk and protective factors, common types, staging, screening guidelines, and current trends and inequities.

  2. Recognize the emotional, cultural, and psychosocial impacts of breast cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, and metastatic disease.

  3. Apply trauma-informed, culturally-responsive, and patient-centered communication strategies when supporting individuals affected by breast cancer.

  4. Identify the role of community-based workers and health providers in reducing barriers to screening, early detection, and then diagnosis, and treatment.
