Class: Woodturning for Beginners (Spindle)

Overview:

Learn some woodturning basics at our new Woodturning Studio in the Portobello Tool Library!

What to expect?

This is a short introduction to woodturning on a lathe. You will learn about the tools involved, how to keep them sharp, how to mount a blank on the lathe and how to use different lathe chisels to create different forms. The hope is that by the end of the class you will have an understanding of basic woodturning techniques and skills, as well as having something that you have turned yourself. This might include a spurtle, pestle, spinning top or rolling pin!

We have four wood lathes, one per attendee, and you will be working individually with the support of our class teacher.

This class is aimed at people who have never turned wood before.

Beginners and non-ETL members are welcome!

This class counts as a lathe induction, meaning that if you are already a member (or if you sign up for membership after this class), you will be able to come along to our "Book-a-Lathe" sessions in the woodturning studio.

Prerequisite: None

Materials: (all included) - reclaimed hardwood

Tools: Lathe, lathe chisels

*Proof of ETL membership required for discount when attending the workshop.

**** NOTE: Please notify us before booking a ticket for a minor. The workshops at the Edinburgh Tool Library are for participants age 18 or over but we might welcome minors 15 - 17 when accompanied by a parent/guardian. We will consider if the workshop is appropriate for a minor and reserve the right to confirm or cancel the booking. Thank you for your understanding and please do get in touch beforehand.

What we expect from you

• We expect all members, volunteers and staff to follow and uphold our shared Code of Conduct.

• Always ask the lead volunteer if you are unsure of anything, and always listen to them - they’re there to help you.

• Follow instructions to use machines safely (this includes always having the face-shield down when using the machine, tying long hair back, not wearing loose clothing or jewellery, and turning the lathe off when not in use).

• Have fun, be kind, and stay safe!
