Classical Guitar Spring School with Stu Tyrrell
Event description
Whether you’re picking up a guitar for the very first time or looking to grow your skills as a developing player, the Classical Guitar Spring School is your chance to explore the expressive and exciting world of classical guitar — with expert guidance, hands-on activities, and a chance to perform!
Led by accomplished guitarist and educator Stu Tyrrell, this three-day program offers a range of engaging activities tailored to school-aged students. From beginner “Come and Try” sessions to chamber music, ensemble rehearsals, solo workshops and masterclasses, there is something for everyone.
What’s Included
Come and Try Classical Guitar
Designed for children aged 4 and up, this friendly, bite-sized introduction to classical guitar requires no experience. Students will use smaller-sized guitars (¼, ½, ¾) and take part in 10–15 minute hands-on mini-lessons. Basic rhythm, posture, and listening skills are explored through fun, Suzuki-inspired activities. Guitars are provided.
When: Saturday 27 September | 10:00–11:15am
Guitar Ensemble (3 Sessions)
Open to current guitar students, this short-term ensemble meets once each day to rehearse and prepare for a final performance. Students will work on ensemble etiquette, score reading, part allocation (based on skill level), and musical collaboration. All ensemble participants will perform in the final concert.
When:
Saturday 27 September | 11:30am–1:00pm
Sunday 28 September | 11:30am–1:00pm
Monday 29 September | 11:30am–1:00pm
Chamber Music (3 Sessions)
Students will be placed in small groups (e.g. duos or trios) and coached in chamber ensemble skills including listening, blend, balance, phrasing, and shared decision-making. This is an excellent opportunity for those who enjoy working closely with others.
When:
Saturday 27 September | 1:30–3:00pm
Sunday 28 September | 10:00–11:15am
Monday 29 September | 10:00–11:15am
Guitar Workshops (2 Sessions)
These small-group sessions provide solo and chamber performers with the chance to play and receive feedback in a supportive, constructive format. Students will gain confidence, build expressive tools, and prepare for the final concert. Optional for participants, but highly encouraged.
When:
Sunday 28 September | 1:30–3:00pm
Monday 29 September | 1:30–3:00pm
Classical Guitar Masterclass
This engaging public session is a must-attend for all participants and is also open to audience members. Stu will perform, share stories and insights about the guitar’s history, construction, right-hand techniques, tone, and extended effects such as harmonics and rasgueado. Includes Q&A.
