Clontarf Cottage Ghost Hunt
Event description
Ghost Hunt at Historic Clontarf Cottage, Balmain
Step into the eerie past of Clontarf Cottage, one of Balmain’s oldest surviving residences, for an unforgettable ghost hunt.
Built in 1844 by Robert Blake, a former soldier and Sydney’s first speculative builder, Clontarf Cottage stands as a testament to early colonial life on the Balmain Peninsula. Named after the site of a famous Irish battle, this cottage has witnessed nearly two centuries of triumph, tragedy, and mystery.
The Blake family endured much sorrow here, from the early deaths of Robert’s first wife Ann and several children to Blake’s own passing in 1875. Clontarf later became part of the Blake Estate, passing through hands that transformed it from a foundry to a live theatre space. Despite its storied past and the community’s fight to save it from demolition in the 1980s, Clontarf has sat quietly, concealing its secrets within its sandstone walls.
Now, you have the chance to explore the dark corners of Clontarf Cottage with seasoned paranormal investigators. Using advanced ghost-hunting equipment, we’ll search for lingering spirits of the Blake family and uncover the stories etched in this historic house.

What is a ghost hunt?
A ghost hunt is an exciting, hands-on experience where participants join seasoned investigators to explore haunted locations in search of paranormal activity. Here’s what your night will look like:
1. Introduction & Equipment Briefing*
The event begins with an introduction to the site’s history and known hauntings. Investigators will explain what the night will entail, and will take you on a quick walk around of both buildings.
2. Dividing Into Teams
The group will be divided into smaller teams to cover different areas of the site. Investigators will guide you through various parts of the locations—each with its own ghostly reputation.
3. Investigative Techniques
Participants will use the equipment as they move through the site, paying close attention to sudden temperature drops, mysterious sounds, or strange EMF readings.
4. Exploration of Paranormal Hotspots
Every location has specific areas known for paranormal activity. You’ll visit these “hotspots,” where sightings, noises, and unexplained events have been reported.
5. Debrief & Evidence Review
At the end of the hunt, the group regathers to discuss the night’s findings.
6. Safety & Respect
Throughout the event, there is an emphasis on safety and respect for both the spirits and the location. Investigators ensure the group follows safety guidelines and maintains a respectful approach to paranormal exploration.
