Event description

Pull on your walking shoes as you will climb Australia’s youngest volcano (optional), visit Hell’s Hole a large and impressive sinkhole and RAMSAR listed Piccaninnie Ponds National Park on the coast.

Get an understanding of the unique geology, spectacular hydrology and unique ground water dependent ecosystems of the region.

Our first stop is the striking Parreen, Mt Schank State Heritage area. Mount Schank's cone-shaped form is a rare example of volcanic activity in recent geological time.

There will be a short but steep climb (optional) up the cone of Parreen (Mt Schank) here you will have a 360-degree view of the area and into the crater. Discover the Boandik creation story of Craitbul, the first explorers and settlement after the war.

Enjoy morning tea prior to our next geological wonder. Hell’s Hole, one of the largest and impressive karst features in the Limestone Coast. It is a cenote – a sinkhole that extends into open water. A short walking trail meanders uphill to the sinkhole and a viewing platform.

Picnic at Piccaninnie Ponds on the coast – here you will enjoy a picnic lunch and view the fresh water entering the ocean. We meander along a short trail to the important fish weir, learn about the adventure of eels and the ambition to restore the fresh water flow to the Glenelg river.

A moderate level of fitness required, climbing the volcano is optional it is a steep but short approximate 15-minute hike up to the rim with lots of rest points for great views. The short walks to Hells Hole and the Piccanninie Ponds fish-way and board walk are all flat, with some uneven ground underfoot.
