co-design between worlds: care, solidarity and reclamation

This event at Koorie Heritage Trust on the Birrarung offers practical tools and stories for co-designing between worlds while centering care, solidarity and supporting self-determination for many communities. 

Everyone is welcome. And, we especially encourage mob, trans folks and young people to come along. We have special pricing available for the communities we're part of.

We encourage attendees to come with openness to new and old questions, to not having it all figured out, going slowly and being in solidarity with our many strengths and struggles towards justice. 

session description

We’ll yarn, connect and learn about:

• reclaiming co-design as something mob have done for thousands of years 

• exploring how we hold each other up in this work, roles and care structures 

• supporting many communities to reclaim authorship from beginning to end 

• doing co-design and co-production in ways that are more accessible and accountable to communities 

• sharing projects and examples from our work (you’ll have the chance to share yours, if you want to in small groups) 

Through our partnership, we’ll model bicultural co-facilitation. Being by the Birrarung (Yarra River) we’ll include walking as active processing (if walking is accessible for you). 

💬 about the hosts 

Jessie and KA are friends and colleagues who work between worlds. Jessie (he/him) is a proud Wiradjuri man, a dad and long-time advocate for social justice. KA (them/they) is a designer and a trans person who mainly works with young people and on health justice. Our solidarity is our strength. what to expect 

• starting slowly, in a yarning circle (we’ll end there, too) 

• having choices in how you take part 

• not having cringey icebreakers or forced fun 

• taking regular breaks (one per hour, if you need more you can take it) 

• morning and afternoon tea (you’re in charge of your own lunch) 

In one day, you won't learn how to deliver workshops or facilitate co-design. Facilitating co-design takes time, experience and supervision to develop.

who is this session is for

We welcome people of all backgrounds and suggest this session is most useful if you: 

• are already working with communities in some capacity (this could be in a volunteer or community-based role) 

• already have a basic understanding of lived experience, co-design and engaging with power 
  

This session is not for people: 

• looking for basic cultural competence training 

• looking for co-design 101 (if this is you, we recommend our Understanding Co-design course) 

• working solely in for-profit or commercial spaces

we try to design learning with many access needs in mind, with a focus on: 

• letting you know what to expect beforehand in words, video and images 

• giving choices with explicit permission to come as you are and normalising many ways to be

• providing fidgets, clear instructions and many breaks 

• not putting anyone on the spot to talk - speak only if you want to 

• not focusing on anything too hard or for too long 

• asking attendees not to wear strong smells 

• valuing what everyone brings to this space and we will facilitate in a way to bring peer-to-peer learning to life as much as we can and you are interested in, as a participant 

• giving you things to take away afterward to remember the learning 

You can let us know about additional learning or access needs, cultural needs, sensory needs or learning preferences. We’ll work hard to meet those needs and may have some limitations with the venue and workshop format, that we’ll communicate with you.
