Event description

Free Tech Demo Day for regional businesses!

The fifth in our 8-part Collie Tech and Innovation Series masterclasses, Internet of Things for Your Business,  is on Thursday 19th August at Slay Space in Collie from 9.30am - 12.30pm.

This is an amazing opportunity for businesses in the Collie region to get insights and learnings from experts in IoT and industrial sensing/networks, Prof Iain Murray, Siavash Khaksar and Dr Yifei Ren from the Cisco-Curtin Centre for Networks and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department at Curtin University.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of internet-connected objects able to collect and exchange data. IoT is expanding at a rapid rate, and it is becoming increasingly important for professionals to understand what it is, how it works, and how to harness its power to improve business. As of now, there are over a billion devices globally, generating trillions of gigabytes of data every single day.

Companies are channelling their funds and efforts on the Internet of Things to bring in precision and optimized work-flow mechanisms. With top companies investing on state-of-the-art visions on connected devices such as driverless forklifts, smart breweries, smart lifestyle products and more. The IoT sector is disrupting the way we live and work and any task that needs more human effort is being reduced with the help of data and apps.

You will discover:

- What is IoT.

- Understand the design process for an IoT system.

- Practical exposure to IoT components.

Open to all businesses across all industries.

The CONNECT Collie Innovation and Tech Series is part of a Groundswell grant through Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.#innovation #iottechnology #regionaldevelopment #collie #internetofthings

  • Professor Iain Murray AM, Deputy Head of the School of Electrical Engineering, Computing & Mathematical Science (EECM), Co-Chair of the Curtin Cisco Centre for Networks

Afternoon tea  provided

John Curtin Distinguished Professor Iain Murray AM received his B.Eng (Hons) in Computer Systems Engineering in 1998 and his PhD titled “Instructional eLearning technologies for the vision impaired” in 2008, both at Curtin University.

Currently employed as Deputy Head of the School of Electrical Engineering, Computing & Mathematical Science and Co-Chair of the Curtin Cisco Centre for Networks. His research interest include; embedded sensors in health applications, the Internet of Things, Industrial Automation and assistive technology/learning environments for people with vision impairment.

He founded the “Cisco Academy for the Vision Impaired” in 2002 to deliver ICT training to vision impaired people globally. He has supervised over 20 research students’ completions and published in excess of 150 peer reviewed articles in the fields of IoT, engineering education and assistive technology. He is a Member of the Order of Australia, Fellow of the Australian Computer Society, Curtin Academy Fellow and a senior member of the IEEE.

Mr Siavash Khaksar is an associate lecturer in the School of Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences at Curtin University. He received his B.Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Azad University, Science and Research branch in Fars in 2012, his M.Eng in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Embedded Systems from Curtin University in 2015, and is currently undertaking post-graduate research focusing on assistive technology and use of motion sensors and machine learning to help children with cerebral palsy. He specialises in embedded systems and digital hardware-software co-design. He currently teaches several embedded system and digital design units at Curtin University having developed lecture materials and designed professional engineering laboratories for these units as well as acting as a faculty advisor for Curtin’s online IOT course offered on edX. Siavash is also the project coordinator and supervisor for undergraduate and postgraduate students at Curtin University.

Dr Yifei Rens is a lecturer in the School of Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences at Curtin University. His disciplines include Deep-q neural network, In-band full duplex, Machine Learning, Media access control protocols, Reinforcement learning, and Wireless communication.
