Colour Gathering: Earth paint making workshops

Making paint, practicing reciprocity, and learning from the earth

In this hands-on workshop, we will explore the process of making earth based watercolour paints from gathered stones and natural binders. We’ll spend time noticing and gathering rocks that have already been separated from the earth, honouring their long journey and the ancient processes that have shaped them. Through grinding, patience and attention, we will transform these fragments into earth pigments and create our own handmade paints.

This workshop is offered in two configurations;

• As a village style workshop held in the afternoon during the school holidays with adults and children (6+*) welcome to explore these processes working together

• And as an evening session, allowing adults to immerse in this process in a more contemplative, reflective space.

Alongside the practical process of paint making, both workshop settings will explore the deeper relationship we have with the materials we work with, the immense age held within a stone, the long processes that have shaped it, and what it means to participate in changing its form after aeons of being held as rock.

Together we will consider ideas of reciprocity: how we might receive from the land with awareness and gratitude, and how we might cultivate a relationship of care, response and offering in return.

The evening workshops for adults only will offer a somewhat slower and more spacious exploration of these ideas and processes, with room for deeper conversation, reflection and attention to the materials themselves.

You will leave with a collection of handmade earth paints and an invitation to continue noticing, gathering and working with the colours held within the landscapes around you.

• Adults are of course welcome to attend the daytime workshops without bringing a child along. This workshop has been created as a unique village style experience for people of varying ages.

• The afternoon sessions are suitable for adults and children aged 6+* (children must be accompanied by an adult).

• *You will know best if a workshop of this duration and nature will be suitable for you child or if attending this solo and sharing the process at home would be most appropriate.

• The evening sessions are adults only gatherings designed to be immersive sessions of slow craft, earth pigments and attentive making.

• This workshop is also available for private groups.
