This event will include:
- An information session for all participants on affordable housing and how the Hornsby Shire Council can take action.
- Short-sharp introductions from local candidates running in the December Council elections.
- Q&A on specific commitments council candidates can make ahead of their election.
This forum builds on the successful first forum with over 177 people participating. We hope you can join us again as we continue to use our voices to ask for affordable housing in our area.

COMING HOME TO HORNSBY
With the seemingly unstoppable rise in local property values and rentals, front-line health and emergency services workers, retail sector workers, early childhood and aged care workers, single parents, older women, and survivors of domestic violence in need of transitional accommodation from refuge to mainstream are among those groups often priced out of rental housing in our area.
A lack of Affordable Housing* options in the Hornsby Shire leaves many people on low to moderate incomes experiencing ‘rental stress’ (where more than 30% of household income goes toward rent). Rental stress increases risks of homelessness, or often forces people to move away from family and friends, established support networks, schools, and employment in search of cheaper accommodation.
Recognising this need, in 2018 the Hornsby Shire Council (HSC) released an Affordable Housing Discussion Paper. Despite numerous submissions from the community in support of Affordable Housing, it appears no further action has been taken. With major developments planned for Hornsby Town Centre and around the Cherrybrook Metro, now is the time for the HSC to create a meaningful Affordable Housing Strategy, and commit to mandatory inclusionary zoning targets for new developments.
On November 18, Sydney Alliance will bring together a broad spectrum of individuals, community organisations, and local churches to pursue real action on Affordable Housing.
The 'Coming Home to Hornsby' community forum invites HSC candidates for the December election to present their policies on Affordable housing. Sydney Alliance will also specifically be asking candidates to commit to actions.

*Affordable Housing refers specifically to rental properties that are made available for at least 20-25% below market value for very low, low and moderate-income individuals and families. Eligible households must apply for Affordable Housing, and tenancies are usually managed through not-for-profit community housing providers. Affordable housing is different from Social Housing.
