Description
This October, Hope Economy is hosting the inaugural Common Hope Conference presented together with Tearfund and Common Grace.
Common Hope is a new one-day gathering for Christians who long to see the Church more fully embody the hope of Christ through justice, compassion and action. Together, we'll explore how the gospel shapes our response to the issues our communities face while encouraging one another with practical ideas, stories and opportunities to take the next step in our local contexts.
Come and be encouraged, challenged and equipped alongside others who have a common calling and a shared hope. Because lasting change isn't something we pursue alone; it's something we build together.

Speakers
Bec Oates
Rebecca (Bec) is Tearfund Australia’s CEO. Appointed to the role in January 2025, Bec has sector experience in church engagement, advocacy, marketing and strategy development and over 20 years leading her own business, making her an entrepreneurial and relational leader. Bec is passionate about issues of justice and whole of life, Jesus shaped responses to poverty.
Sam Fagan
Sam is the Advocacy and Church Engagement lead for Tearfund. He has a background in pastoral ministry and spiritual direction having completed his MTH in Philosophy and Theology. Sam lives in Sydney with his wife and two young daughters.
Rosie Kendall
Rosie Kendall has been the CEO at Hope Economy (formerly Christians Against Poverty Australia) for nine years. During this time, she’s led the team through complex seasons of organisational change – including adapting the model for the Australian context and a national rebrand. Rosie leads with a focus on values, strategy and people-alignment and holds a passionate conviction that the work of Hope Economy deeply matters to God. Rosie is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and when she’s not leading Hope Economy, she loves reading, camping and spending time with her husband and three daughters.
Gershon Nimbalker
Gershon Nimbalker is the Nation al Director of Common Grace, a role he has brought a wealth of experience to - and a proven passion for Jesus and justice. He is well known and deeply respected across the Christian social justice and aid sector in Australia, having worked for more than 15 years in advocacy, policy and research, as well as leading and growing grassroots movements to campaign on issues of social justice. Gershon lives on Awabakal Country, Newcastle, with his wife Naomi and young family, attending Hamilton Baptist Church.

The panel will consist of Jon Owen (Wayside Chapel), Ruth Powell (NCLS Research), Jude Simion (Philoi Global), and Melanie Crosscombe (Anglicare). They will share their experience, reflect on ideas from the day and answer questions.

FAQs
- How do I get there?
Street parking in the area is all limited to 1 or 2 hours, 7 days a week. Therefore, the best way to get to Paddington Anglican Church is via public transport. You may like to make use of Park&Ride facilities that allow you to park for free at select train stations when using public transport.
The bus stop ‘Five Ways Paddington, Glenmore Rd’ is within 100 metres of the church. You can reach this stop on Bus 389 which runs from either Town Hall train station (bus stop on Park St, Stand H) or Bondi Junction train station (bus stop Stand G).
- What food will be available on the day?
We will cater for a morning and afternoon tea break and have light refreshments available. Lunch is not provided. There are several cafes and restaurants located within 100 metres of the church. We recommend connecting with others attending the conference over lunch. You are also welcome to bring your own lunch and enjoy it in the church’s courtyard.
- Why are Hope Economy, Tearfund and Common Grace working together and not other organisations?
Common Hope began as a conversation between leaders who shared a desire to better equip Christians to live out their faith in practical ways. Because Hope Economy already had a relationship with Tearfund and Common Grace and we shared an interest for this kind of gathering, we decided to collaborate on this inaugural conference.
This isn't intended to suggest that these are the only organisations doing important work. We deeply value the many Christian organisations serving alongside the Church across Australia and are grateful for the contribution they make. In fact, we hope the conference will help participants discover and connect with a range of ministries. Common Hope is simply one expression of what can happen when organisations work together around a shared hope in Christ and a common calling to serve others.
- What if I can only come for part of the day?
Check out the schedule and see what is happening when. We’d love for you to be there for as much of it as possible. We’ve kept costs as low as possible and don’t have different ticket options, but if cost is an issue please let us know and we’ll work with you to resolve something.
- How will my personal information be used?
This conference is being hosted by Hope Economy and they will have sole responsibility for managing your personal information. Your details will not be shared with other organisations without your express permission.
