Communicating data insights for impact or action

Need to create dashboards and reports but you're not sure what to focus on?
Join me as we explore what to consider before you start shaping your communication outputs and how to deliver your data messages effectively. The aim is to motivate our audience to take a specific action or understand key information.
Delivered over 4 hours in total, with two Zoom sessions of 2 hours duration on:
- Tuesday 3 June 2025: 11:00 am – 1:00 pm AEST, and
- Tuesday 10 June 2025: 11:00 am – 1:00 pm AEST.
There will be scenario-based group activities, using Zoom breakout rooms, for you to apply the principles of communicating data insights. We will focus on dashboards and reports.
These training sessions will enable participants to:
- Understand the audience’s needs and interests and how they absorb information.
- Learn how to convey the core problems, messages and data caveats of your project for impact or action.
- Select appropriate visual aids to successfully communicate data insights.
- Identify opportunities to simplify your message and direct the audience to the most important parts.

Is this workshop for you?
This workshop is suitable for anyone designing the layout or content of statistical communication outputs for specific audiences. This includes analysts, policy officers, project managers and so on. This workshop will focus on dashboards and reports, but the concepts are transferable to other statistical communication mediums too.
Note: This workshop will focus on the communication of information and results. It will not cover how to carry out good data analysis or how to compute summary statistics. It will cover how to select an appropriate chart.
