When unnatural disasters hit, local councils are left scrambling to repair roads, rebuild community facilities and keep people safe. That money comes from ordinary people – ratepayers and taxpayers – and right now the rising cost of climate disasters is fast outstripping council revenue. 

The Communities for Climate Compensation network is a growing network of councils and community run campaigns building community and political support for sustainable, increased funding for councils and communities.

We imagine a future where the billion-dollar corporations whose pollution contributed to the damage actually paid their fair share to fix it. Imagine local councils having guaranteed funding for disaster recovery and climate resilience. Imagine communities having the resources they need to thrive – instead of constantly scrambling.
