Community Birding Group
Event description
Join our Community Birding Group!
Please join us on our next monthly birdwalk on second Saturday of every month from 8am to 10am - a fun winter birding exploration of the lovely Randwick Environment Park. The easy loop walk includes bush and wetland, grassy areas and permaculture patches, providing a range of habitats reflected in high bird diversity, including many small birds which are missing from our surrounding suburbs. Sometimes we are even able to see tiny birds very closely, as they are so used to people passing by. The wetland is currently very full and shimmering in the sunlight, we often see different duck species, Ibises and Coots, and tiny Grebes disappearing as they dive to hunt, then bobbing up. Occasionally a bird of prey passes over, with other birds giving warning calls or flocks rising up dramatically.
Community Birding Group
A guided birdwalk to teach participants how to identify and understand birds and their needs. To build a local community of bird enthusiasts and contribute data to citizen science project such as Birdata. To enjoy and appreciate the biodiversity of Randwick Environment Park and realise how vital a remnant it is, being within an local area of low biodiversity, and how important it is to create and connect healthy habitat for the local survival of bird and other wildlife species.
We usually stop to share ideas and special birding moments over morning tea - feel free to bring something yummy to share, and if you enjoy photography please bring your camera as some of the group have shared excellent photos from the birdwalks.
Renée Ferster Levy have many years’ experience in guiding nature hikes (including rockpool walks for schools and whale-watching) and birdwalks for all ages, and presenting habitat creation workshops, including for Woollahra, Waverley, Randwick, City of Sydney, Mosman, Lane Cove and Canterbury-Bankstown Councils, and was part of a team presenting BirdLife Australia’s ‘Birds in Schools’ program. I love helping others observe and enjoy the incredible beauty, plants and wildlife around us, see how it is all interconnected, and understand that we are part of nature, not apart from it, and how we can act to protect and reconnect habitat.
