Description

Birth is a threshold that touches every part of a woman’s being. Yet in our culture, this profound rite of passage is rarely given the time, care, or ceremonial recognition it deserves. Mothers are often expected to move quickly forward, without being the opportunity to land back into their bodies, and integrate the medicine birth and early postpartum offers us.

Drawing on the traditional Closing of the Bones ceremony and adapted through years of offering this work, our Community Closing of the Bones creates space to honor this passage with intention, held within community. Marking the “before” and “after” of this foundational threshold is crucial for fully stepping into our roles as Mothers.

This ceremony offers a modified version of our full Closing of the Bones ritual- weaving together warming practices, song, birth-story-witnessing, and traditional wrapping to help you land more deeply into your body and show up more fully to the work of motherhood. We will close our container by sharing a warm meal provided to us by Moonlight Kitchens.

Offering this ceremony in community allows us to remember that mothers were never meant to cross these thresholds alone. We need to be witnessed in who we are now, on the other side of the threshold of birth- which irrevocably changes us in ways we might still be discovering.  Each woman is individually witnessed and tended within the warmth of a shared ceremonial space.

This ceremony is open to mothers at any stage of postpartum. Your birth may have been weeks ago, months ago, or many years ago. You may come with a story that feels beautiful, painful, complex, unfinished, or many things at once. There is no particular kind of birth or postpartum experience required, and nothing needs to be resolved before you arrive. Come as you are.

FAQs

  • Can I bring my baby?

We welcome babes in arms, who are not yet mobile. We will have hands to hold your little one during portions of the ceremony where you won't be available.

  • I had a traumatic birth- is this for me?

Closing of the Bones ceremonies can be profoundly healing, especially when birth was difficult or traumatic. Closing the energy portal of birth, and landing more fully in your body, can offer important energetic integration that enables more digestion of the experience of birth.

  • I gave birth 5 years of ago- is this for me?

Yes! We welcome mothers at any stage of the journey. This ceremony can be supportive even years down the line, and support you at whatever stage of motherhood you are in.

  • I'm pregnant but I still want a closing of the bones for my last pregnancy- is this for me?

Unfortunately this ceremony is not appropriate while pregnant. Reach out to connect with us about Mother Blessing Ceremony facilitation, and to coordinate an individual closing of the bones once your little one arrives!

  • I had a loss- is this for me?

Yes, this ceremony is supportive any time you have been pregnant- early loss, full term loss, full term live birth- you are postpartum in every scenario. We welcome your tender heart.

  • Is this only for first time mothers?

No! We personally have experienced the profound impact of receiving this ceremony for multiple births, in one ceremony.

  • What linage is this practice from?

This practice was given to us via Innate Traditions, though over the years we have added our own elements.
