2026 is the year Australia has finally come face-to-face with the AI-fuelled data centre frenzy. The reckless build-out of data centres already underway threatens to completely derail the clean energy transition in Australia.

To sound the alarm, Greenpeace Australia Pacific launched a landmark report documenting the scale of the problem in Australia - showing the enormous amounts of energy consumed by data centres, how this could entrench polluting fossil fuels in our energy grid, and exposing the insidious relationship forming between the gas and data centre lobby. The unchecked data centre boom poses a grave and immediate threat to people and our planet, and is moving at lightning pace.

This is a live issue in Lane Cove, where multiple large scale data centre facilities already exist and additional are proposed close to homes, a school, playing fields, and important conservation zones.

Come along to hear more about the report’s findings from the Greenpeace team, followed by an important discussion on how to turn outrage into action. We’ll have speakers from Bibbul Ngarma Aboriginal Association and Trillion Trees joining virtually to talk about their successful campaign against a data centre proposal in Perth, and representatives from Lane Cove Responsible Planning sharing how you can get involved in the local campaign.

Speakers:

Greenpeace Australia Pacific: Solaye Snider and Dr. Simon Bradshaw will present the key findings from the new Greenpeace report which unpacks the energy and emissions impact of data centres and explains why we’re calling for a moratorium on new development.

Bibbul Ngarma Aboriginal Association: Francesca Flynn will discuss why Noongar Traditional Owners came together with the broader Perth community to stop the GreenSquare data centre being built on the Mandoon Bilya (Helena River).

Trillion Trees: Kate Herren, Communications and Fundraising Coordinator will speak on how a small conservation organisation co-led the campaign to stop the GreenSquare data centre.

Lane Cove Responsible Planning: Representatives will share about the community campaign against data centre proposals in the area and how folks can get involved.

Rochelle Flood, Greens councillor for West Ward on Lane Cove Council: Find out about the council's role and useful resources relevant to data centre proposals in the area.
