Community Workshop: Self-advocacy Strategies for Autistic LGBTIQA+ People Navigating Specialised Healthcare
Event description
Reframing Autism invites you to join Kai Ash for a community workshop covering self-advocacy strategies that may be useful when seeking specialised healthcare as an Autistic LGBTIQA+ person. Kai will be drawing on his own personal experience of simultaneously coming out as a trans man (and seeking access to gender affirming healthcare) while also getting an Autism diagnosis.
Themes discussed in this session will be:
- why you are not alone as an Autistic LGBTIQA+ person, even if it might feel that way sometimes
- the tendency for healthcare specialists to, well, specialise – and why this can make things difficult for people with intersectional identities
- some useful strategies to use when accessing specialised healthcare, drawing on Kai’s experience of seeking transgender-related healthcare as an Autistic person and Autism-related healthcare as a trans person
Kai Ash (he/him) is a writer based in Yuggera country (Brisbane region). He’s currently studying clinical psychology and has past degrees in law and gender and cultural studies.
If you are unable to attend at the scheduled time, please note that it will be recorded and that the recording will be sent out to registrants. A link (valid for 30 days after the event) will be sent to all attendees 1-2 business days after the workshop, so that you may watch it at a time that is suitable for you.
Ticket sales close 8pm Tuesday 6 February 2024 (AEDT).
