Community-led Peacebuilding: Continuing the conversation
Overview of the Session
Community-led change has the potential to be transformational for our communities and as a country — to come together across differences, to share power, and to collaborate for a better shared future.
But in Australia, this work cannot happen without also attending to the unresolved conflicts, traumas, fractures and injustices that our communities have formed on in recent generations. This is the work of peacebuilding in Australia.
Peacebuilding is not the absence of conflict. Peacebuilding is about leaning into often-unacknowledged conflicts that have shaped our communities today. It is the work of those of us with Settler ancestry, First Nations peoples and for many recently arrived migrants, who can bring their wisdoms and experiences to this work in Australia.
Peacebuilding strengthens the relationships, accountability and social cohesion that allow communities — and the people and institutions working alongside them — to genuinely work together.
This session continues the peacebuilding dialogue convened at ChangeFest25, where people across the movement came together to share what it means, personally and systemically, to truly make peace on these Countries. A clear call came from this dialogue a call for us to each find our role and purpose in peacebuilding as central to the work of community-led change.
This is the next conversation as a movement. Bringing together First Nations and Settler voices to explore further the threads from the CF25 dialogue such as:
What does peacebuilding mean on this continent and how does it align with community led ways of working?
How are we having the difficult conversations that are necessary for us to work and lead together in our communities?
How do we shift the conditions individually and systemically - thinking across places and across times for intergenerational healing and ways forward?
Peacebuilding makes something possible that wasn't possible before: the trust and shared accountability for communities and institutions to move together, as true partners, on a common agenda for change.

Janine Dureaux
Janine Dureaux, PRF Fellow and CFI Belonging for All Lead
Janine is a proud Nyikina and Bunuba woman who was born and raised in Derby, living on Yawuru Country and a proud mother of two young men. Her professional experience includes over 30 years’ working in Aboriginal Affairs from State and Commonwealth governments, NGOs and Aboriginal organisations, from the local to national level. Since 2018, she has volunteered to lead Kimberley Aboriginal women’s leadership gatherings to discuss gender justice, systems reform and self-determination through the eyes of Aboriginal women. She is a founding member of the Kimberley Aboriginal Women's Council (KAWC) and held the position as the Inaugural Chairperson from 2021-2024. Janine's 2026 Paul Ramsay Fellowship seeks to support First Nations women-led Kimberley nation rebuilding by developing a culturally grounded framework and training approach that equips her people for self-determination. Working alongside Kimberley women leaders and Elders, she will co-design a Kimberley Nation Rebuilding Framework that integrates cultural governance, healing-led leadership and conflict transformation – laying the foundations for a future region-wide training program to strengthen governance, support Prescribed Body Corporates, and enable communities to confidently engage in cultural, service and system reform.
Anna Powell, CEO, Collaboration for Impact
Anna is a respected leader in community-led systems change in Australia. She has deep experience in leading networks and organisations to transform power dynamics and structures for equity. Her track record spans across international development, movement building, philanthropy, community collaboration and systems innovation.
About the ChangeFest Learning Network
The ChangeFest Learning Network is a regular opportunity for all of us across the ChangeFest Movement to share practice and learn, to connect and build, and to take a deep breath and reflect. It will provide us all with the space to listen and hear from each other in ways that will help us in our own work for community-led system change – whether it be in communities, government, large for purpose organisations and businesses.
Lunch & Learn Sessions are usually held from 12.30 – 2.00pm (AEST) and are designed to be “easy for you to contribute, simple for us to hold, meaningful for us all to be part of.”
Each event will be free and provide opportunity to explore practices and stories of community led change – and an opportunity to connect with each other across the ChangeFest Movement.
