EOI: Green Compute at the Edge: Sustainable digital infrastructure from regional WA to the world

The GreenTech Hub is launching an Innovation Challenge to identify technologies that will set a new standard for sustainable compute infrastructure in regional WA, at scale, with genuine benefit to the communities that host it. 

Regional WA sits at a rare convergence: world-class solar and wind resources, geopolitical stability, digital sovereignty, vast buildable land, and direct fibre connections to fast-growing Indo-Pacific markets. 

The opportunity isn’t simply to attract data centres, it’s to build them differently. Next-generation facilities powered by 100% renewables, with net-positive water use, waste heat reused by local industries, and jobs and lasting economic value that stay in regional communities. Not infrastructure that extracts. Infrastructure that gives back. 

This Challenge connects innovators with real industry problems, tests solutions in the WA context, and creates a pipeline of investment-ready opportunities for industry, government and communities alike. It is a practical launchpad for the sustainable infrastructure projects that will define regional WA’s digital and green economy future. 

We are now inviting Expressions of Interest from individuals and organisations who are:

GreenTech Hub has been working closely with industry, government, researchers and regional stakeholders to map the biggest barriers and opportunities in sustainable data centre development in WA. Through this engagement, five priority use cases are ready to be validated and shaped by developers, customers, innovators and key stakeholders: 

Potential Innovation Areas

The GreenTech Hub has identified the following key areas where innovation could accelerate the deployment of next-generation data centre infrastructure in WA:

Energy Integration

Innovations in microgrids, behind-the-meter renewable systems, long-duration storage, and flexible load management that enable data centres to operate with genuinely low-carbon energy profiles, rather than relying on fossil fuel backup.

Cooling and Water Use

Liquid cooling, seawater cooling in coastal locations, warm-water cooling systems, and waste heat recovery models that reduce water consumption, improve efficiency, and lower environmental impact in WA's specific climate context.

Shared and Enabling Infrastructure

Shared substation, cooling, water, fibre backhaul, and access infrastructure that improve project viability for multiple users, reduce duplication, and enable regional development at scale.

Heat Reuse and Regional Industry

Systems that turn data centre waste heat into a productive regional asset, supporting desalination, industrial processing, protected agriculture, aquaculture, or mineral processing.

Siting and Integrated Design

New planning, coordination, and design frameworks that bring together land planning, energy, cooling, connectivity, environmental considerations, and regional development objectives — particularly in emerging precincts such as the Mid-West.
