    Event description

In a world that is increasingly divided, what are the skills our young people need so that they can thrive now and into the future? The most essential component of them all is connection.

In fact, human connection is considered the most important ingredient to having a good life. Our ability to connect has taken our species to phenomenal heights of innovation, through collaboration and specialisation. Connection is also our best defence against mental and physical health issues.

And yet, so often our young people today are feeling disconnected, pressured, anxious and alone.

This special event will be a conversation about how our brains have evolved to enable us to connect and why human connection is critical for our mental health and our species’ survival. By understanding human connection, we can work together towards a less divided and more positive future for our children.

Dr Mark Williams is an internationally renowned professor of cognitive neuroscience, with over 25 years’ experience conducting behavioural and brain imaging research focusing on our social skills. He is also a father to two teenagers. He is a world authority on the teen brain, having published more than 70 scientific articles on the subject. Mark is committed to making cognitive neuroscience more accessible to the public.

Catherine Kolomyjec is a trauma-specialist social worker and a Stanford Global Ambassador for Applied Compassion. Catherine is the author of books/journal articles on trauma/PTSD and runs The Kindness Challenge, teaching young people and their families the physical and mental health benefits of compassion. She is also a mother to three, now adult, children.

“I am excited to welcome Mark back to WA for this special event, exploring the neuroscience of connection with our local families. There will be time for parents to ask questions and discuss issues that many young people face today. We know that parents will feel inspired and supported by the evidence-based tips to help every young person thrive. Thank you to Sacred Heart College for hosting this important conversation.” – Catherine Kolomyjec, The Kindness Challenge
