Connection & Communication: Foundations for Early Learning

The first three years of life lay the foundation for all future learning, relationships and wellbeing. Long before children use spoken language, they are communicating through movement, facial expressions, gestures, eye contact and emotional connection.

This session explores how educators and caregivers can recognise and respond to these early forms of communication with sensitivity and respect, understanding that every interaction is an opportunity to support development. Participants will examine how the language adults use, their tone of voice, pace, body language and willingness to pause and listen all influence a baby's developing sense of trust, belonging and confidence. Through everyday moments, including care routines, movement and play. Educators will discover practical strategies for fostering secure relationships, encouraging early language development and nurturing each baby's emerging sense of self.

Rebecca Bridge

Rebecca is a proud Marrawarri woman who lives and works in Brisbane. She holds an AMI 0–3 Diploma and a Diploma in Children’s Services, and has undertaken studies in Early Childhood Teaching.

With more than 11 years’ experience working in Montessori toddler environments, Rebecca has also supported Strait Start Programs in the Torres Strait.

Rebecca is passionate about supporting better outcomes for First Nations peoples in Australia. Her experience includes coordinating a Reconciliation Action Plan, speaking at Educator Yarning Circles, and presenting a Masterclass for Koori Curriculum.
