Dr Julia Kim is a medical doctor, global public health expert and the Program Director at the Gross National Happiness (GNH) Centre in Bhutan*. GNH is a holistic and sustainable approach to development, founded in Bhutan, which balances material and non-material values through a thoughtful and practical policy and decision-making framework. The GNH Centre is a non-profit civil society organization that promotes the concept of GNH values nationally and internationally by facilitating transformational learning to achieve sustainable societal change.

Julia has a deep background in programs, policy and research in the fields of global health and sustainable development, and holds degrees from Cornell University, the University of Manitoba, Tufts University, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Prior to joining the GNH Centre, she worked extensively in Africa, and Asia with NGOs, academia and UN agencies (UNDP and UNICEF).

Join Julia in a conversation about the history, power and potential of the GNH framework as an example of next economy thinking. We’ll explore the practical aspects of the framework alongside the spiritual and philosophical foundation that underpins it. We’ll also delve into Julia’s personal experience of the relationship between public health, the natural world, spirituality and our economy.

About Julia Kim:

Dr Julia Kim is a leading expert in global health, wellbeing, and sustainable development, and the Program Director of the Gross National Happiness Centre Bhutan. Julia joined the Centre in 2013, after serving as a member of the International Expert Working Group for a New Development Paradigm. Through local and international partnerships, the GNH Centre leads initiatives that promote a more flourishing, equitable and sustainable world - based on New Economics principles, alternative progress measures, and the growing science of wellbeing, (Global Wellbeing Lab and The RIght Livelihood & GNH Program). She previously worked as a physician & HIV researcher in Africa and Asia, before joining the United Nations (UNDP and UNICEF) in New York. Julia brings a background in leadership development, research, and policy in the fields of wellbeing economics, global health and sustainable development. She is a member of the Club of Rome and an associate of the Presencing Institute – a global network that views the integration of awareness-based practices as a core capacity of 21st-century innovation and leadership. Julia holds degrees from Cornell University, the University of Manitoba, Tufts University, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

About our host, Berry Liberman:

Berry is the co-founder and Creative Director of Small Giants, the Publisher of Dumbo Feather and a mum to the three cutest kids in the world. Berry loves the garden at work. Especially the roses. A few years back, Berry used to write screenplays in LA and directed a few short films but decided to come home, get married to Danny and start Small Giants.
