Course description The “Conversations About Gambling” course teaches participants how to provide first aid support to someone who may be experiencing gambling harm or a gambling-related mental health crisis. Using a practical, evidence-based action plan, participants learn how to: -approach someone they are concerned about to start a conversation about the concerns -offer initial support and information -encourage the person to seek professional help or other support. Course participants learn the signs of gambling harm. This includes how to recognise and respond to suicidal thoughts and behaviours. Most importantly, the course will explain what supports available to help the person seek professional help.
Who can benefit from this course ∙Those supporting friends and family who may be at risk of experiencing gambling harm. ∙Workers in the community sector who work with vulnerable people. ∙Anyone who is just interested in finding out more about this issue.
Instructor Mark Smith is the Founder, Director and Principal Master MHFA Instructor at Safer Communities. He is a fully qualified Master Mental Health First Aid Instructor and Educational Consultant and has a BSc, Dip. ED and M.Ed. He has extensive experience delivering mental health education across Australia, having worked for 35 Years in Public Education, Health and community sector roles. Mark is highly engaging, utilises humour and shares extensive professional and personal narratives to enrich the experience of workshop participants.
