Coogee to Clovelly, Cultural Coastal Tour - livestreamed!
Event description
Join proud Yuin man Trevor Walker as we explore the coastal gullies and beaches along the Coogee to Clovelly coastline and find out why this area is important to local Aboriginal groups.
The virtual tour starts at Coogee (taken from a local Aboriginal word koojah which means "smelly place" - owing to the amount of seaweed that can collect on the beach), Trevor will discuss how the the once heavily wooded Coogee gully was a haven for wildlife such as wallabies, snakes, lizards, possum and birdlife. Coogee oval, which was once a billabong, was a constant source of water fed by the many streams and creeks that still flow beneath the roads and houses of the area.
Trevor will then head up to Dolphin Point and the Bombora lookout discovering a myriad of bushtucker (edible plants) still growing around the coastal track. The tour then moves to Gordons Bay to discuss Coogee's prolific golden kelp, ancient shell middens, fishing, diving and the importance of whales to Trevor's people. Finally, if time permits, Trevor will walk to Little Coogee (Clovelly) to complete the experience.
