Cook and Share
Event description
Hello, I'm Zac - chef and owner here at Dux Gutz Catering. I want to bring people together with informal style cooking classes where we share our ideas about food as we cook for each other.
In collaboration with Communify and particularly the North West Community Hub, these classes will be free for adults (18+) who are most disadvantaged. Classes are available to the public as a paid event, with tickets covering ingredient costs.
Classes will be held for 10-20 people in our kitchen here in Milton, where we'll cook up a selection of different meals for each other to take home. We'll also sit down at the end of our cooking session and share a meal with each other.
Lessons will be fairly free-from, with a focus on developing a cooking style that's meaningful to you. Along the way I'll be teaching essential skills to become a confident home cook:
- knife skills;
- cooking with stoves and ovens and understanding heat control;
- seasoning and flavour combinations;
- how to cook with what's in season;
- workflow, cleanliness, and how to organise your space.
All required equipment, food, and packaging will be funded by public ticket sales and takings from our café here at Dux Gutz.
5:00-5:10pm: orientation
If it's your first lesson, I'll meet you out the front of the kitchen, where you'll put on an apron and name tag, and I'll take you for a tour of the kitchen and introduce you to the class.
5:00/5:10-5:30/5:45pm: prepare ingredients
We'll step into the kitchen where there will be workstations set up ready to go with chopping boards, knives, all required ingredients, and any required equipment. I'll move between workstations to give you tips and tricks, and some pointers on technique, workflow, and cleanliness.
5:30/5:45-6:45pm: time to cook
We'll cook with pots and pans on gas and electric stove tops, and we'll roast and bake in our ovens. We'll cook a range of different homestyle dishes, inspired by your own ideas and experiences. Tell me in advance your favourite food or something you’d love to learn how to cook, and I'll be delighted to source the ingredients to make your dish at our next cooking lesson.
6:45-7:15pm: eat together
We’ll share the food we've cooked for each other, and sit down to eat together in the café space at long tables. Please help yourself to a complimentary drink from our cafe fridge.
7:15-7:30/8:00pm: pack down
We’ll serve up the remainder of our meals in biodegradable containers ready to take home, and we’ll clean up the kitchen. Each attendee will go home with 3-4 meals for the week ahead.
