COP27 Training for Indigenous Peoples hosted by IPO-Australia with trainers: Graeme Reed & Kera Sherwood- O'Regan.
Event description
The training is free of charge and is for Indigenous Delegates and all other Indigenous peoples interested in learning more about CO27. The training aims to provide Indigenous peoples the knowledge and skills to facilitate their full, effective, and meaningful participation in COP27 and surrounding opportunities.
The training is being coordinated by Cathy Eatock, Co-Chair of the Indigenous Peoples' Organisation (IPO) - Australia (Long March for 'Justice through treaty' (indigenouspeoplesorg.com.au) and Pacific Representative to the Facilitative Working Group of the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform, UNFCC.

Session Details: The training will consist of eight, two hour video conference sessions via Zoom over 4 weeks. The sessions will be a mixture of presentations and facilitated dialouge. The session topics, dates and times are outlined below:
- Session 1 - Introduction to UNFCCC & Training (20/09/22) - Introduction and overview of the UNFCCC (history, structure, acronyms, resources). Overview of COP 27, key logistical information, and establishing cultural safety. Path forward and expectation-setting.
- Session 2 - Indigenous Peoples at the UNFCCC (22/09/22) - Introduction and overview of the Indigenous Peoples Caucus, practices of organization, communication, and coordination. Brief update on Indigenous organizing in advance of COP 27. Deep dive on the Facilitative Working Group and the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform.
- Session 3 - UNFCCC Structure & Organization and Negotiation Process (04/10/22) - Deep dive on how the UNFCCC is structured, the subsidiary bodies, and how this relates to the negotiation process. Civil society and Indigenous Peoples involvement in the process, including overview of UNFCCC constituencies. Opportunities for Indigenous Peoples to influence negotiations, as well as Indigenous coordination.
- Session 4- Content Deep Dive (Part 1): Mitigation, NDCs, and carbon markets (REDD+ and Article 6) (06/10/22 ) - Deep dive on negotiations and discussions related to mitigation, NDCs, and carbon markets, with a special emphasis on what is happening at COP 27.
- Session 5 - Content Deep Dive (Part 2): Adaptation, Loss and Damage, and Finance (11/10/22 1-3 pm AEST and 3-5pm NZ time) - Deep dive on negotiations and discussions related to adaptation, loss and damage, and finance, with a special emphasis on what is happening at COP 27. Opportunities to get involved in these processes (inside and outside strategies).
- Session 6- Key Indigenous & Pacific Priorities and Campaign Areas at COP 27 (13/10/22 ) - Overview of focus areas for global Indigenous Peoples Caucus at COP 27. Wānaka/Talanoa on collective priorities and positioning for Indigenous Pacific delegates. Desired outcome: All delegates have an understanding of shared priorities & strategies; understand scope and avenues to exercise own mandates; Delegates have avenues to join appropriate working groups and other mechanisms to reflect Pacific Indigenous priorities.
- Session 7 - Communications and Media (18/10/22) - Introduction and overview of media context within COP, including opportunities related to Indigenous advocacy. Using communications strategically for Indigenous Rights advocacy. Considerations for ethical and inclusive communications in a COP context. Tips for maximizing your own communications at COP27.
- Session 8- Beyond Sharm El Sheikh (20/10/22) - Final preparation and discussion about COP 27, including logistical information, safety considerations, etc. Overview of process post-COP27, including intersessional / SB sessions in June and the lead up to COP 28. Building accountability practices to community, intergenerational knowledge exchange, etc.
