    Event description

The remnant native forest at Staveley Camp is under threat from invasive weeds and we need your help to save it.

In this free community event, you will:

    • take a short forest tour with kaitiaki gen de spa
    • hear about the restoration work that has gone on already
    • learn how you can make a difference & help ensure the forest thrives
    • recognise two invasive species and learn how to eliminate them
    • be part of the forest protection effort by wrangling weeds
    • connect with others and with nature

We have two start times so you can enjoy the tour and introduction to the work either at 9am or 1pm.

If you’ve weed wrangled here before and/or can’t make it for either of those start times, feel free to come whenever you can during the day and someone will show you the explainer video and show you to the weed wrangling site. Just choose the appropriate ticket when registering. Children are welcome to get involved and have enjoyed wrangling weeds in the past. Please note children are the responsibility of their caregivers.

It is up to you how long you stay. Whether you can spare an hour weed wrangling or all day, the time you spend will help preserve this wonderful patch of bush for future generations. This is not hands and knees weeding like you might do in the garden, it really is ‘wrangling’. It is rather fun and you get a wonderful sense of achievement seeing the difference you’ve made.

Make the most of this fantastic opportunity to learn more about native forest protection and help make this gorgeous forest a thriving native sanctuary!

Note: All tools, gloves & eye protection will be provided but you may wish to bring your own. Please remember layers, rain coats, sun hat, a water bottle and your lunch/ some snacks depending on when you come. There is a kitchen available for use.

This Keep Learning Mid Canterbury event is part of the October 2024 Wellbeing Weekend - focusing on forest and human wellbeing. It’s organised by Staveley Camp & Connecting Mid Canterbury. Those who help wrangle weeds have the opportunity to stay the night at the camp (for free or for a koha) on Saturday evening and then join us for the Wellbeing Day on Sunday ($40, limited places available, details and register here).
