Do you love someone experiencing addiction and are looking for support?

BreakThrough is a free, online education and support program for families, friends, and partners of people experiencing addiction. Addiction can take many forms including alcohol, other drugs, gambling, and other behaviours. BreakThrough is designed to support you to better understand addiction, manage relationships, and regain a sense of control in your life. Each week we offer practical tools to help you feel more confident and less alone while supporting someone you care about.

This series of BreakThrough runs on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 8th July (7-8pm) – Understand Addiction

This session provides an introduction to addiction and addictive behaviours, including how substances and behaviours affect the brain and reward system, why people develop addictions, and an overview of recovery and treatment options. You'll gain insight into how addiction may be experienced by both your loved one and yourself, helping you better understand the challenges it can create and the different ways it can affect relationships.

  • Wednesday 15th July (7-8pm) – Communicate through Addiction

This session focuses on building stronger communication skills and increasing confidence in having difficult conversations. You'll learn how verbal and non-verbal communication can affect interactions, how to communicate assertively and effectively, and ways to encourage positive change while maintaining connection with your loved one.

  • Wednesday 22nd July (7-8pm) – Managing Relationships

This session explores the impact of addiction on relationships. You'll learn about common relationship patterns and dynamics that can develop when trying to support a loved one, why these patterns can leave people feeling stuck, and how shifting our approach can lead to healthier and more positive interactions.

  • Wednesday 29th July (7-8pm) – Boundaries and Safety

This session explores how boundaries protect your wellbeing and support sustainable relationships with a loved one experiencing addiction. You'll learn how to set boundaries and move away from guilt, recognise your limits, and develop practical strategies to stay safe during challenging situations.

  • Wednesday 5th August (7-8pm) – Addiction and Mental Health

This session explores how addiction, addictive behaviours, and mental health can influence one another. You'll learn about common mental health experiences linked to addiction such as anxiety, depression, paranoia, and drug-induced psychosis, and explore practical ways to support a loved one while looking after yourself.

  • Wednesday 12th August (7-8pm) – Managing Emotions

This session explores the emotional impact of loving someone in active addiction. We'll unpack experiences such as compassion fatigue, grief, guilt and shame, and explore practical tools to help you navigate these emotions. You'll learn how concepts such as radical acceptance can help you let go of the struggle to control the uncontrollable and reconnect with your sense of self.

  • Wednesday 19th August (7-8pm) – Recovery Tools

This session explores recovery as a process of change for both your loved one and yourself. You'll learn about the many pathways to recovery, why setbacks are expected, and how realistic expectations can support long-term wellbeing.
