Capabilities for Transformative Change: Activating Fields of Energy.

Due to the success and feedback of our launch webinar held on September 11th 2025, we have been encouraged to offer additional participatory webinars to take a deeper look at what is in each pillar of the report.

Each exploration will contain theoretical grounding, dialogue in small groups and practice of the theory so that there is an opportunity to practice in real-time. In some of these explorations we will invite in someone from the field with deep experience in the subject co co-contribute their insights, in others Jenny, Josie or Al will host.

This webinar focuses on the Capabilities we call Activating Fields of Energy

Fields of energy exist all around us. Fields are organised patterns of energy that influence and respond to the quality of activity occurring within a place and a system. It is an idea you will find discussed in both the physical and social sciences, and it is an important concept when working on transformative change.

We have all experienced fields of energy. Anyone who has joined a march or a protest such as Extinction Rebellion’s campaign, or Fridays for Future with Greta Thunberg, has been inside a field of energy that is climate campaigning. Anyone who has joined a community of interest working on beach cleaning, or river restoration, or forest planting is within a field of energy that is the environmental

movement.

At the moment a Power of Place cohort shifts and comes together in collective inquiry — rather than early tentative stages when we don’t know each other — a field has been born. When a group of people meet to talk about mapping a bioregion first shift from discussion into action, they have created a field which, although it may only be a field of two people in the beginning, has the potential to grow.

Really Regenerative CIC is part of a field of capacity building of regenerative practice, design and culture which includes many other different groups and individuals. That system is nested within the wider field of systems change and the emerging field of systems evolution. To some extent, we are also nested in the field of placemaking.

Fields of energy are one of the underlying conditions that make it possible to transform a whole system through a single nodal intervention.

In any given place/region there may be many different organisations and people working on water. They may include rivers trusts, communities of interest, NGOs, water authorities, citizen science groups, leisure groups such as fishermen, farmers, wildlife and biodiversity protectors, rewilders, sewage companies, sports facilities. Although they may all be working on different aspects of water, they have the potential to become a field of energy if they can all see the benefits each brings, the contribution each makes and unify towards a future vision. They are a field of potential but which has not yet seen itself.

In this lunchtime practice session, we will look at:-

• how we can begin to see in living systems and fields of energy in place

• the conditions and capabilities needed to bring a separate field of effort into a collaborative field of energy

If you would like to bring your own challenge to this webinar, there may be time at the end for a group fishbowl.

As with our first study, we have supplemented the content with Really Regenerative and our founder Jenny Andersson’s own decade-long study of place-based regenerative design and development, much of which was documented for her study: Places For Life. We have also been allowed to bring in some critical illustrative case studies from other sources such as the research study by Leen Gorissen, Karla Bonaldi, Piet Haerens and Lénia Rato, commissioned by the Belgian Federal Public Service for Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment.

Really Regenerative’s own journey, studying and supporting many place-based community-led regenerative projects around the world helped to to deepen our understanding across the different fractals of place, from neighbourhood to bioregion.
