Cut & Compose: Capturing Place Through Collage

We all have places that we feel connected to, whether they hold a special memory, a homeland, a connection to a person, or just a feeling.

Transform those cherished places into collages in this beginner-friendly workshop, with artist Katie Hallam. No prior experience is needed, just a desire to get creative and celebrate the places that hold significance for you.

Bring photos, printed or on a device of any place that evokes a strong memory or feeling. We'll use them as inspiration to create expressive collages that capture the essence of these special locations. With a variety of art papers, mixed media, and good old glue and scissors, you'll explore the fundamentals of collage:

    • Composition: Learn how to arrange your elements for visual harmony.
    • Form: Capture the unique features of your meaningful place.
    • Texture: Add depth and dimension to your artwork with unique materials.
    • Colour: Evoke emotions and memories with a thoughtful colour palette.

This workshop is a perfect way to:

    • Immortalise the places that have shaped your story.
    • Discover the joy of college, a fun and accessible art form.
    • Experiment with playful techniques and unleash your creativity.

All materials provided. Just bring your favourite photos. If you have interesting or textured paper you wish to bring along, please do.

Katie Hallam is a mixed-media artist who works playfully with collage, printmaking and drawing. Katie’s work often explores connection to place. Her debut solo exhibition, Little Landmarks is at Rangiora Chamber Gallery from Sunday 11 August to Thursday 12 September.
