From Resistance to Freedom: Reimagining Palestine - Mridula Sharma

Moonscape (2020) and Tomorrow, again (2023) are short films directed by Mona Benyamin, a young Palestinian woman living under the Israeli occupation. Moonscape takes the form of a music video tracing the story of a man called Dennis M. Hope, who claimed ownership of the moon in 1980 and founded the Lunar Embassy. By establishing a connection between his story and the director’s, it considers the relationship between hope, nostalgia ,and despair. Tomorrow, again features a dysfunctional news broadcast consisting of different segments, which recreate and react to various prominent daily catastrophes from Palestine. It utilises fragmented and conflicting testimonies, doppelgängers, and a surrealist visual language to appeal to notions of truth and fiction, and explores what happens to urgency when it becomes timeless.

Featuring a talk and a discussion with the director, the event will create fertile conditions for collective reflection on the present. Together, we will examine the history of violent colonial aggression targeted against Palestinians to develop conversations on extending solidarity, evaluate how we can meaningfully contribute to resistance, and shape our visions of freedom in the postcolonial establishment.
