TOM HAINS QUARTET
Tom Hains - Alto saxophone | Michael Dominis - Piano | Naia Leato - Bass | Nathan Tewi – Drums
Our December concert welcomes back jazz pianist Michael Dominis, who featured in our first series in 2022. He forms part of the Tom Hains Quartet. While still at school, Tom is already forging a career as a jazz musician, having released his first CD, 'Petrichor', earlier this year. Wollongong has become synonymous with producing exceptional young Jazz musicians—a driving force behind this has been the commitment of trumpeter, music educator, and jazz musician Eric Dunan.
Meet Tom Hains
My name is Tom and I am a jazz alto saxophonist from Wollongong. I have been playing the saxophone for nearly 6 years, and I am passionate about jazz. I frequently play professional gigs around the Illawarra and Sydney.
For the December Emerging Concert Artist Series, our quartet will perform a range of original music from my recently released album Petrichor, as well as some well-loved standards. These pieces will feature improvisation, with each band member taking solos while working together to create unique, original takes and an atmosphere that the audience will enjoy being part of.
I look forward to seeing everyone there in early December!
Petrichor is the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. It is a combination of plant oils and a compound called geosmin, released from soil bacteria, which are then carried into the air by raindrops. The term was coined in 1964 by two Australian scientists who derived it from the Greek words "petra" (stone) and "ichor" (the fluid that flows in the veins of gods).
Entry is free. Donations are appreciated.
