October Homeschool STEM on Site - 3rd - 8th Grade
Description
STEM on Site allows groups to visit the We Energies STEM Center at MSOE and engage in hands-on, STEM based activities. While not limited to only homeschool students, the timing of this program is scheduled to enable homeschool students to participate with other homeschool scholars from around the area.
THIS MONTHS PROGRAMS & SCHEDULE
10:00 - 11:30 3rd-5th: Cool Puppy!- Students will apply the Engineering Design Process to create doghouses that shelter a puppy from the heat. The design constraints include temperature, size, and cost. Students build their prototype and test them by taking thermometer readings under hot lamps.
10:00 - 11:30 6th-8th: Explore IE & AI- Students will explore key concepts in industrial engineering and artificial intelligence. First, students will work collaboratively in groups to meet specific criteria by optimizing an industrial engineering process for efficiency. Next, students will learn how machine learning works by taking on the role of AI. They will work together to spot hidden patterns and uncover secret rules. In this unplugged AI activity, teams practice how AI models learn by recognizing patterns from examples.
PREREQUISITES
Students must be able to read at the lowest grade level listed for a program.
A fundamental learning outcome of nearly all STEM programs includes working in teams to solve problems. With few exceptions, we are unable to accommodate students who wish or need to work independently.
FAQs
- May I drop my student off from the street / sidewalk near the Center?
Families should walk-in to check-in their students. Students cannot be dropped off more than 10 minutes before program start and must be picked up within 10 minutes of the program end time. Children not in a program must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
- How do I get to your facility?
We are located at 1444 N Water Street on the MSOE campus. A map and parking information will be sent to all families at least one week prior to your program start date to the email used for registration.
- Can I sit with or watch my student in your program?
Our programs do not have capacity to accommodate adult visitors. The Center has windows in each classroom where families are welcome to visually check in on their students. Limited seating around the facility will be available for families who wish to stay while their student is in a program(s).
- Can siblings or other children sit in and observe other programs?
Only students enrolled in a specific session are permitted to attend.
The Center does not have childcare and parents who wish to stay for the session with other students should bring items to keep those students occupied.
- My student is an advanced learner – can I enroll them in a higher grade level program?
While we know homeschool does not always match up neatly with an academic grade, please enroll your student in the grade level program that most closely corresponds with their current age and grade. All of our programs have variations and elements we can add and redact to make an activity more challenging or easier to accommodate a spectrum of learners.
- My student has accommodations I'd like to discuss - who do I contact?
Families know their students best and information you share helps our staff best support your students learning and participation in MSOE programs.
We ask families to share any information when registering that helps us support learning, behavior, communication or sensory needs. We aim to create a learning environment that is inclusive to all students and this information will help us better understand if we can ensure your student has a great learning experience.
