Get to know your sewing machine
Event description
We’ve heard it a lot, “I’ve got a sewing machine, but I don’t know how to use it” If that sounds familiar then this one day workshop is for you. Dust that machine off, grab all the parts and head over to Art Salvage for a sewing machine workshop. This class is the perfect primer for our other Upcycle Fashion Lab classes.
What we’ll teach:
- Let’s get that machine clean: how to clean and oil your sewing machine
- How a sewing machine works
- How to thread your machine
- How to wind a bobbin
- What all those dials do
- The different types of needles and threads and when you should use what
- Common adjustments to make when your machine misbehaves, ie) troubleshooting
By the end of this class you’ll not only know your machine, you’ll have made something with it!
Requirement: Bring the manual for your machine, If you don’t have it, it’s likely you can download one. You will receive a phone call from one of the instructors before class for a verbal intake of your machine to ensure it’s in a condition to use in class. Read the Art Salvage Class Policy before completing registration.
Questions to answer during registration:
- What is the make and model of your sewing machine
- Do you have the instruction booklet
- Have you sewn with it
- What are your sewing hopes and dreams
- Is your machine in working order?
Your Teachers:
Tori Thurman has been sewing since she was in elementary school, and as a content creator and craft educator, continues to share her love for sewing with others. Not only does she incorporate her passion for sustainability through upcycling projects, she even sewed her own wedding dress 23 years ago and it has stood the test of time!
Stephanie Christman- My grandmother, aunts, and mother were excellent seamstresses. Sewing machine stores have been my family's business since the 1950s; it was only natural that sewing became a part of my life and continues to be. I enjoy teaching people how to use a sewing machine and share the joys of creating that also preserves the environment.
