Nick specialises in the delivery of transport strategies, programs and business cases, with 25 years’ experience working in the UK, Europe, North America and Australia.
Nick wrote NSW's rail strategy (Sydney's Rail Future), walking strategy and cycling strategy. His firm, Vivendi Consulting, are leaders in the use of AI to understand how cities influence active transport movements.
Nick uses a broad set of skills and experience to develop evidence-based, collaboratively-developed strategies and plans. This includes deep analysis using AI and technological innovation, advanced project and stakeholder management with deep infrastructure strategy, integrated transport planning, development and delivery expertise.
Nick is a specialist in sustainable and active transport
(walking and cycling) strategies in recent years. He has led the development of pioneering AI tools that provide robust evidence for how to plan and build sustainable cities and precincts, and how these should be integrated with public transport. This work is a key platform to support a move to net zero
carbon emissions for cities in Australia and internationally.
Examples of key projects Nick has successfully delivered include:
- Led the delivery of Sydney’s Rail Future for Transport for NSW, the first long-term rail strategy released in NSW for over a decade that has underpinned $10s of billions of investment, including Sydney Metro.
- Set up the program to deliver Sydney’s Rail Future, which delivered >$1bn of rail infrastructure investment in NSW.
- Delivered NSW’s first Walking and Placemaking Strategy, engaging with virtually all NSW Councils. This included using PAWS, a pioneering AI model to analyse walking and placemaking.
- Delivered NSW’s first Cycling and Micromobility Strategy, using deep collaboration techniques with hundreds of stakeholders to plan a state-wide cycle network.
- Overseeing Vivendi Consulting’s work to develop the Cognitive Mobility and Place System (C-MAPS), the world’s first cognitive route-based AI transport demand model.
- Preparation and analysis of active transport strategies in areas including North Sydney, Waverley and Westmead using insights from AI.
- Acted as Chief of Staff to the CEO of Infrastructure Australia, developed the Assessment Framework IA use to evaluate projects, wrote sections of the IA Infrastructure Plan (launched by the Prime Minister), and supported the assessment of major business cases.
- Owned the assurance of the c. $40bn of infrastructure investment in NSW, as an Executive Director at Infrastructure NSW. This included extensive reviews of FBCs and SBCs.
- Nick has also worked for clients including the UK Home Office, the BBC, the UK Department of Social Services, Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan, GlaxoSmithKline and Roche.
