JMI Jazz Orchestra performs Duke Ellington: Music Is My Mistress

For this concert, the JMI Jazz Orchestra will be exploring the diverse sounds of Duke Ellington's Orchestra spanning his 50 year career. Jazz's preeminent composer, Ellington considered his orchestra as his instrument, carefully constructing his own musical universe by drawing heavily on the personal sounds of his musicians as if they were recurring characters in a story. 

Starting with the early 'Jungle' sounds associated with the Cotton Club in Harlem through to his long-form explorations of extended structures, and arriving at the richly textured suites that concluded his output that were inspired by his orchestra's global travels, the music of Duke Ellington shows us that jazz knows where it comes from, and yet can still be constantly curious and evolving. Join the JMI Jazz Orchestra as we pay tribute to Duke Ellington with our musical portrait of a jazz life, well-lived.
