Lampshade Making Workshop Jamberoo
Description
Two different lampshade workshops, on the same day, at my Jamberoo workroom!
Spend the morning making your own shade to take home. There's a choice of sizes and shapes available - shown at checkout. BYO fabric - all details of what to bring provided after registration.
Then, if you wish, stay for an afternoon of demonstrations, where I’ll share the techniques behind restorations, lined shades, trims and tricky fabrics—and answer your specific questions about making more shades at home.
It’s an unusual opportunity to try lampshade making and explore what comes next, all in one day. You can also book either session on its own (with preference to AM workshoppers in PM session).
Supplies available to buy to continue your lampshading at home.
Includes morning & afternoon tea with homemade yummies.
Maximum five people per session.
The attached Youtube clip gives an overview of what to expect.
FAQs
- Who is this for?
Suitable for people over 16years, with reasonable hand dexterity - there's lots of fiddly cutting and fabric handling.
Most of the work is done standing at the work table.
- How difficult is shade-making?
It's not difficult - but it sure is fiddly!
Kate will take the group step by step through the process - and make it as enjoyable as possible.
- Do I need to bring anything?
You don't need to bring anything except fabric.
(see below for fabric info)
If you own a pair of sharp fabric scissors bring them - but if you don't - no need - we've got plenty to share.
If you're staying for the PM workshop, bring lunch (no shops nearby, and it's a quick break between workshops).
- Are there kits available to purchase?
Yes, some limited kit sizes - but also - plenty of supplies for you to purchase to continue shade-making at home.
- Which workshop should I choose?
If you'd just like to have a nice morning out in beautiful surroundings, with lovely like-minded people and take something home you've made yourself - choose the morning workshop.
If you're really keen to learn as much as you can about shade-making, and have other projects in mind such as restoring vintage shades or learning how to choose the right shape shade for your lamp - then the PM session is going to suit you.
However, if you've been dying to learn everything you can about shademaking from scratch, and know you want to make this your hobby, or even a business, then the whole day option is perfect for you!
- What are start & finish times of both workshops?
AM workshop:
8.50 arrive
9am start
12.30pm finish
PM workshop:
1.15 arrive
1.30 start
4.30 (approx) finish
- What fabric should I bring?
The ideal fabric for beginners to work with is lightweight cotton, such as sold by quilt shops.
Also, any light - medium weight 100% cotton or linen from shops such as Spotlight (note: not from the furnishing department).
A full detailed fabric info sheet will be sent following your registration - including the quantity needed for the shade you choose at the checkout.
meanwhile - check out link to this fabric info on our Youtube channel...https://youtu.be/fx6VXTGiLr4?si=kVpUXZ3FB__oFQdZ
- What sort of lampshade do we make?
In this workshop you'll learn how to make a contemporary style of shade - where the fabric is bonded to the PVC lining.
This differs from traditional shade-making, which involves many hours of hand-sewing onto a rigid frame, and creates a much more old-fashioned style of shade (think of our grandmothers' floor lamps, with bell or tulip shade fringed shades).
This method is considerably easier, quicker and highly satisfying - knowing you'll be going home with a beautiful shade in fabric of your choice, made in just a few hours!
- Is there a choice of shades in this workshop?
Yes - at the shopping cart you'll see you can choose from 2 sizes of drum shades, and 2 sizes of tapered shades.
- Which workshop should I attend if I want to restore my own lampshade?
At the moment we don't run a dedicated 'makeover' workshop - the best way to learn is to gain the skills and knowledge in the Introductory workshop in the morning, then stay for the Demonstration workshop in the afternoon, where Kate will go into detail about how to do a makeover shade.
You'll be able to take home the supplies to do this in your own time, and will have the skills, confidence and knowledge from the morning session.
- Do you provide notes?
Yes - a comprehensive set of notes in digital form will be emailed to you following the workshop.
Better still - you'll have access to Kate's online course, which fully details all the steps learned in the AM workshop - you've got lifetime access to this valuable resource - so can refer back to it indefinitely.
- Where is the event located?
The Lampshade Workroom is located in the Jamberoo Valley, about 2-2 & a half hours south of Sydney (near Kiama) and ACT.
It's a very easy, beautiful drive coming from either direction.
Our workshop is located in beautiful countryside at the end of a quiet country lane - we recommend using your map app to find us and ADD 10-15mins to the journey in case something holds you up along the way (for instance dairy-cows crossing the road which is a pretty regular occurence around here!).
Address details will be provided following your registration.
- What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes, preferably not with floaty-flappy sleeves that might be a nuisance as you're using your hands; and comfortable shoes because you'll be on your feet the majority of the workshop time.
- Can I bring a friend?
Workshops where friends have come together are absolutely the best!
However - if you'd like to bring a group and there's not space in this event - why not get in touch to arrange a private group event (a lampshade party!) where you'll have the room to yourself and can choose a date to suit you all.
- What happens if I'm running late?
If the worst happens and you're late, please call or text if possible.
There’s lots to fit into this workshop, so please arrive 10-15mins early and be ready to start on time. We cover essential steps straight away and need to keep the group moving, so we won’t be able to wait for or catch up late arrivals.
- Can I bring my own lamp with me to ensure I choose the right size shade?
Absolutely! Bring it along and Kate can help you choose a shade that looks right and fits properly. If the size you selected at checkout turns out not to be the best match, you can switch to a more suitable size on the day. Any price difference can be settled then.
- What's your refund policy?
A lot of preparation goes into each workshop, with materials ordered and prepared especially for those attending. For this reason, bookings are non-refundable.
If you find you can’t make it, you’re very welcome to send someone else in your place—just let Kate know beforehand.
Life doesn’t always go to plan, so in the case of a genuine emergency, please get in touch. Where possible, Kate will be happy to transfer your booking to a future workshop.
Thank you for your understanding.
- Do you run workshops in other places?
Yes.
Not only at our own home-studio in Jamberoo, but several other locations in eastern NSW. If you have a venue yourself, and would like to arrange a workshop in a venue of your location, please get in touch to discuss.
