One Day Bike Maintenance Course

During the course you will learn the basics of bike maintenance in a fully hands on manner. Our mechanics will lead you through repairs on your own bike. This will give you a greater understanding of your bicycle and the confidence to maintain it between services and perform trailside fixes. The day will include the following sessions:-
Part 1: An Introduction - Essential supplies, use of tools, caring for your bike, safety checking your bike.
Part 2: Brakes - Learn how to check and change your brake pads, spot issues with your brakes and how to set up your brakes effectively. We may focus on rim or disc brakes, cable actuated or hydraulic depending on the needs of the group.
Part 3: Drivetrain - Learn how to check for wear and tear on your drivetrain and when to replace parts. Replacing a chain. Indexing gears and common issues such as bent derailleur hangers.
Part 4: Bearings - Understand how the different bearings on your bike work, spot for wear in all bearings and practice setting up your headset for smoothness and longevity.
Cost
We ask that you pay what you feel you can afford and what you feel the course will be worth. Bear in mind the more you pay the more courses we can run in the future.

This scheme is aimed at people who are out of work, on low incomes or facing other financial barriers.

We will probably focus on rear gears as this should be applicable to all attendant's but we're happy to adapt to the desires of the majority.

Brakes - set up and problem solving
Depending on the requirements of the group we may focus on rim brakes or disc brakes, cable actuated brakes or hydraulic brakes, or cover a little on each.

Intro to Bearings
Overview of the different types of bearings on a bike and how to check them and spot issues, followed by an explanation of the parts of a headset and a practical on how to adjust headsets to keep them running smoothly.
