Rescued & Reimagined: Collaborative wearable art with Upcycle Newcastle.

Join local textile upcycling experts and the Upcycle Newcastle team for a unique collaborative workshop experience at the Clyde Street Arts Precinct as part of Rescued & Reimagined and NMPM: ReFashionista. 

No experience required! 

About 

Join a team in reinventing old denim and textiles, working together to craft a unique collaborative upcycling project. This isn’t just about repurposing fabric, it’s about telling new stories through reclaimed materials. 

Over the course of 24 three-hour workshops, we will be creating multiple wearable artworks that will be showcased on Thursday 19th June, 2025 at the free NMPM: ReFashionista event, at Newcastle Museum.  

Guided by skilled facilitators, you’ll experiment with deconstructing, reshaping, and reimagining denim and other textiles, while contributing to wearable art pieces that evolve through collective creativity. More than just a creative exercise, these workshops explore sustainability, circular economy, renewal, and the beauty of reinvention. 

Duration 

• Rescued & Reimagined Workshops run from 29/04/25 to 12/06/25 each workshop is 3hrs long ($15 each) 

• NMPM: ReFashionista, Newcastle Museum Thursday 19th June (Free) 
  

Who are the creative workshops for? Do I need sewing experience? 

The workshop sessions are tailored to different experience levels even if you've never sewn before. When signing up, please indicate your sewing experience level. Everyone is welcome! 

The Workshops  

Workshops suitable for attendees aged 14+ years 

Rescued & Reimagined Workshops will be held at The Shed, Upcycle Newcastle and could include textile crafting, cutting, hand sewing and sewing machine use. Enclosed shoes are necessary for all participants. 

Thanks to the generous support of the City of Newcastle, these workshops are being offered for the heavily discounted price of $15 each participant ($10 concession).  If you would like to book in for our April/May workshops, you can do so here.

Sewists & Collaborators  

Creative Director Cathy Stuart will lead a team of designers and makers to engage and guide participants to create wearable art pieces through these hands-on creative workshops.

Experience NMPM: ReFashionista at Newcastle Museum, an unforgettable night of sustainable fashion, creativity and community. As the grand finale of Upcycle Newcastle’s Rescued and Reimagined workshops, this event will showcase stunning upcycled denim and textile wearable art through live performances, interactive installations, and thought-provoking conversations. Join us 5-9pm, Thursday 19th June, 2025 at Newcastle Museum to see the completed creations come alive on the catwalk.
