Sustainable Renters' Week: Small Space Gardening

Growing plants and small gardens can drastically improve the livability of your rental, inside and out. But how do you get started? Is your place too small? Join this session to find out how to make a sustainable (and often relocatable) garden, and use plants/ herb gardens to improve your home. 

Gardening can improve the quality of life in your rental, by reducing waste and providing food and herbs and greenery. But it can be hard knowing just how much time and effort you should invest into your garden, given the short term nature of renting in Australia. Join Renew for a panel discussion full of ideas on small space gardening in your rental property.

Speakers:

Jessica Perini 

Jessica Perini works as an editor and a writer by day, specialising in sustainability projects, but she spends every other waking moment on her passion: permaculture. Jessica earned her Permaculture Design Certificate via Milkwood in 2010 and Certificate IV and Diploma through TAFE NSW from 2011–2013. She teaches, facilitates courses and runs working bees at her local community garden and is a regular Farm Hand at Sydney City Farm. She’s designed and run gardens and programs for vulnerable communities, including asylum seekers.

She loves to facilitate online learning about permaculture and has appeared as a Renew Expert in Sustainability and run #TheGreatPause zoom series, which sought to keep communities connected during the COVID-19 pandemic.

'Nanna' Anna

‘Nanna’ Anna is founder and creative director of The Urban Nanna (theurbannanna.com), an educational business that specialises in teaching traditional skills, crafts and methods of living set in the framework of a modern-day world. As well as reviving traditional ways of foraging, cooking, preserving and crafting, she focuses heavily on permaculture and living a sustainable lifestyle as a renter in suburban Australia.

With a history in horticulture and fine arts, Anna has worked in education and consulting for over two decades. She believes that positive environmental and cultural change is possible, and infinitely more attainable if we work together as a supportive global neighbourhood.

Gregory Lorenzutti

Gregory Lorenzutti is a Brazilian-Australian artist and food grower working between the spaces of photography, dance and organic agriculture. He is a graduate from The School of Nature and Climate at CERES (Australia) in Urban Organic Farming and Regenerative Landscape.

In 2020 and 2021 he worked a farmer for The Ecological Justice Hub with its food relief production and distribution in the Merri-bek City Council area through food grown locally at Fawkner Food Bowls - Melbourne/Australia.

He is passionate about the land — practising urban farming and organic agriculture in order to give back to nature. As a migrant, Gregory believes that working with the land and growing organic food through non-violent and ecological methods reflects directly in questions about belonging and identity. It also speaks about the transience in performance, plant life cycle and image making to re-inform his long-term practices as a photographer, dancer and farmer.
