Event description

The NZMASP conference allows postgraduate students in Mathematics and Statistics at all New Zealand universities to share their research and build relationships to allow for collaboration.

Once you have registered, your ticket will include a Google Form link to provide us with your accessibility and dietary requirements, and whether you need accommodation. This form is separate to allow administration staff to register students and process payments on their behalf.

If you are buying tickets on behalf of someone else, please select the "email tickets to participants" option at the buyer information stage of checkout, or forward them the tickets once checkout is complete.

Talks

All participants are expected to give a 10 or 20 minute presentation and have the opportunity to win prizes.

Please note that your presentation does not have to be about your current research project. You may give a presentation on a topic other than your research area, provided that the content is relevant and appropriate for the audience.

Your final presentation title and abstract must be submitted via Google Forms by November 1st.

Plenary speakers

  • Tessa Barret-Walker (Senior Business Analyst, Oranga Tamariki)
  • Dr. Tilman Davies (Senior Lecturer, University of Otago)
  • Dr. Rachael Tappenden (Senior Lecturer, University of Canterbury)
  • Dr. Finlay Thompson (Director Data Science, Dragonfly Data Science)

In addition, we welcome the following guests to run a hands-on activity with attendees:

  • Dr. Jeanette McLeod and Dr. Phil Wilson (MathsCraft New Zealand)

Eligibility

Any postgraduate student at a tertiary institution in New Zealand who uses mathematics or statistics is eligible to register. We will ask for some details of your programme and institution at checkout. We do want to encourage a diverse community of attendees, so please get in touch if you are unsure if you are eligible.

Evening events

While most of the conference events will take place no earlier than 8:40 am and no later than 5:30pm, there will be two evening events - a social event and a roundtable meeting.

The social event is a board games night which will take place at Dice & Slice on Wednesday 27th November from 6 - 9pm. Food will be provided but drinks will need to be purchased by attendees. This event is limited to 70 people.

The roundtable meeting will take place on Tuesday 26th November, exact time TBA. We invite attendees to join us for a discussion on the future of the conference.

Accommodation and Venue

We can offer accommodation at Arcady Hall for students not based in Christchurch, which will include breakfast. Provided accommodation will be from the night of Sunday 24th to the morning of Thursday 28th. The conference will finish mid-afternoon on Thursday to allow for travel time - note that accommodation is NOT provided for the Thursday night. You can register for accommodation using the Google Form link.

The conference will be held in Rātā (formerly called Engineering Core) at UC’s Ilam Campus (69 Creyke Road, Ilam, Christchurch 8041). From the accommodation, it is a 15 – 20 minute walk if you cut through campus. We will provide morning and afternoon tea, and lunches at the venue. Participants are responsible for organising their own dinner, other than at the social event.

Transport

You are responsible for providing your own transport to the conference venue, and accommodation, if applicable. We will provide details on recommended public transport options in our programme.

Payment and personal details

We will request some of your details at the checkout when you purchase your ticket for the conference.

We hope everyone has financial support from their supervisor, department or another source in order to attend. Please talk with them before buying your ticket to confirm that they can reimburse you once you provide a receipt for your ticket. If this system will not work for them or if you are not able to find funding to attend, then please get in contact with us. Depending on various factors we may be able to offer some financial support to cover the registration fee. If you require financial support please contact us!
