TRANSFORM AN OLD SHIRT OR PANTS

Saturday 12 September | 12.15–2.15pm | $45

Choose your starting point, an old button-up shirt or a pair of pants/jeans, and learn how to confidently cut, reshape, embellish and reconstruct existing clothing into a spectacular new wearable piece.

This two-hour guided workshop takes upcycling beyond simple alterations. We’ll explore how to look at an existing garment differently, work with the construction that’s already there and use creative sewing techniques to completely change how it looks and feels.

• Confidently cutting into and deconstructing existing garments

• Reshaping and reconstructing clothing

• Cropping, gathering, ties and creative volume

• Adding panels, inserts and contrasting fabrics

• Patches and visible stitching

• Frills, trims and other embellishments

• Combining elements from different garments

• Using existing hems, seams, waistbands and details to your advantage

• Developing your own upcycling ideas rather than simply following a pattern

THE OLD SHIRT
Transform an unwanted button-up into a completely new silhouette, crop, reshape, gather, add ties, remove or reinvent sleeves, add panels or reconstruct it into something unexpected.

TRANSFORM YOUR PANTS
Take jeans or trousers you no longer wear and rethink them, change the silhouette, add panels, crop, patch, embellish or reconstruct them into an entirely different wearable piece.

Bring one main garment to transform, plus any scraps, trims, lace, ribbons, old garments or interesting textiles you might like to incorporate.

This is a creative, hands-on sewing workshop, so some basic sewing experience is helpful, but you don't need to be an advanced sewer. I'll guide you through the construction and techniques needed for your individual project.

Come with an old garment. Leave with new skills, new confidence and something nobody else owns.

Please note: this is not a sewing tutorial where you will learn garment construction or how to use a sewing machine. The focus of this workshop is creatively reviving clothing in a supportive community environment.

Sewing machines will be available for experienced users and with support, however highly technical sewing instruction will not be provided during the session.
