Sculpture — Creative Studio

Sculpture Studio is a regular monthly offering by Nic Anderson Earth, held at SATORI EARTH on the third Saturday of every month, from 10am–1pm.

These are small, intimate live-work studio sessions, where the work currently being explored within Nic Anderson’s own sculptural practice becomes available to others in a workshop setting.

Each month carries a different theme and creative focus — exploring form, character, texture, construction, surface treatment and different sculptural techniques through clay.

So no two Sculpture Studio sessions will be quite the same.

October Sculpture Studio — FUNGI & FRIENDS

For October, we enter the small, strange and wonderful world beneath our feet — fungi and the creatures who inhabit the forest floor.

Working with clay, participants will create their own sculptural piece inspired by mushrooms, a mouse, a hedgehog or a frog. A small woodland log house is also possible for those drawn to creating a tiny imagined dwelling.

Nic will work alongside participants, demonstrating hand-building and sculpting techniques as the work develops — including building form, joining clay, creating structure, modelling features and adding texture and detail.

This is an ambitious three-hour session, so the forms we work with have been intentionally contained to allow enough time to develop and complete a considered piece.

Once the sculptural work is complete, participants will use under-glazes to introduce colour and surface detail to their piece. Finished work will remain at SATORI EARTH for drying, glazing and firing, and will be available for collection once the ceramic process is complete.

The intention is not for everyone to produce the same sculpture.

Participants are encouraged to observe carefully, learn technique, experiment — and then allow their own imagination, instincts and creative language to enter the work.

More than technique

At the heart of my work through Nic Anderson Earth is the understanding that creativity is one of the ways we come back into relationship with our own Soul Blueprint.

For me, art has never been simply about acquiring technique or producing something aesthetically pleasing. It is a way of seeing. A way of listening. And often, a way of allowing something within us to become visible that we may not yet have words for.

So while I will teach and demonstrate sculptural technique, these sessions are also intentionally held as spaces for self-connection and authentic creative expression.

There is no requirement to create as I create.

In fact, quite the opposite.

My role is to offer enough structure, technique and guidance for you to explore confidently — while leaving enough space for your own instincts, imagination and way of seeing to enter the work.

At its heart, Sculpture Studio is about learning to trust that.

Who is it for?

Sculpture Studio is open to adults and young people aged 12+.

Because this is a focused three-hour sculptural workshop, younger participants need to be comfortable working independently within an adult-level studio environment, able to follow instruction and sustain their attention across the session.

No previous sculpture or pottery experience is required. Both beginners and those with existing clay experience are welcome.

Each month is a stand-alone session.

There is no requirement to have attended a previous Sculpture Studio. Participants are welcome to come occasionally, follow particular themes that interest them, or make Sculpture Studio part of their regular creative practice.

To preserve the intimacy of the studio and allow for individual guidance, each session is limited to 8 participants.

Workshop fee — $85 per person

The workshop fee includes:

Clay: All clay required to create one workshop-sized sculptural piece.

Underglazes: Colours required to add surface detail and finish your piece during the session.

First firing — bisque: Once completely dry, your sculpture will be bisque fired in the SATORI EARTH kiln.

Transparent glazing: Following the bisque firing, Nic will apply a transparent glaze to the work.

Second firing — glaze: Your sculpture will then be fired for a second time to complete the ceramic process.

Shared studio materials and equipment: Provided.

Both kiln firings, transparent glazing and the clay used for your workshop piece are included in the workshop fee. There are no additional firing charges for your workshop piece.

Finished work will remain at SATORI EARTH for drying, transparent glazing and firing, and will be available for collection once the ceramic process is complete.

Your own tools — beginning a sculptural practice

Please bring your own pottery or sculpting tools if you already have them.

If you are new to sculpture, you do not need to arrive with an established collection of tools. An optional Starter Sculpting Tool Kit — $20 will be available to purchase from the studio.

Participants who intend to continue with Sculpture Studio are encouraged to begin building their own collection of tools.

Part of developing a creative practice is becoming familiar with your own tools — learning what each one does, discovering which ones naturally become your favourites, caring for them, and bringing them back into the studio each month.

What to bring

Please bring:

• * An apron or clothes you are comfortable getting clay and underglaze on

• * Your own pottery or sculpting tools, if you have them

• * A water bottle for hydration

Provided: Clay, underglazes, shared studio equipment, bisque firing, transparent glazing and final glaze firing.

If you are unable to attend, bookings are non-refundable but may be transferred as a credit to a future Sculpture Studio session, provided at least 48 hours’ notice is given. Credits are valid for 3 months and are subject to availability.
