    Your Permaculture Garden

Grow your own nutrient dense food successfully! In this course you will learn how to create your own edible garden and live more sustainably, using permaculture practices.  The course will be held on my own productive property and will provide an opportunity for practical experience and to learn about the different permaculture strategies to create an abundant garden.

This course is designed for everyone, no matter what the size of your own space, from a balcony to acreage, for renters, community gardeners and homeowners alike.  The course is scheduled over 6 sessions of 3 hours each, delivered over consecutive weeks.  Weekly attendance will allow you to put your learning into practice in your own garden and return the following week with any questions and to share successes.

    Session 1 – Saturday 10 February 2024 - 9.30am to 12.30pm: Introduction to Permaculture

You will start your learning journey discovering all about the Permaculture Ethics, Principles and basic Permaculture Design.  You will learn about observation, aspect and sun paths and create a basic mud map for your own garden.

    Session 2 – Saturday 17 February 2024 - 9.30am to 12.30pm: Organic Gardening

You will learn about organic gardening practices - how to garden without toxic chemicals, where to start, how to plant, grow and harvest nutrient dense food, all about seasonal planting, crop rotation, polyculture, the difference between annual and perennial plants and succession planting.

    Session 3 – Saturday 24 February 2024 - 9.30am to 12.30pm: Soils, Pests and Predators

This session is all about learning how to support the health and abundance of your edible garden with a natural approach to building great soil, fertilising and pest and disease prevention and control.  Learn about testing your soil type and pH, improving your soil, Integrated Pest Management, good bugs and bad bugs, companion planting and how to make natural fertilisers and pest control from ingredients in your garden and pantry.

    Session 4 – Saturday 2 March 2024 - 9.30am to 12.30pm: Composting and Worm Farming

Today you will learn how to successfully establish and maintain composting and worm farming systems to increase productivity in your edible garden and avoid green waste going to landfill.  Which system suits your situation?  What can you put in your compost bin and worm farm?  How to get the balance right and how to use the outputs.

Session 5 – Saturday 9 March 2024 - 9.30am to 12.30pm: No Dig Gardening, Hugelkultur and Wicking Beds

Today’s session is all about the different types of garden beds.  What are the pros and cons of different garden beds?  How to create them?  Which are more waterwise?  Less resource intensive?  Which is the best choice for your garden?

Our final session is all about how to successfully propagate plants (making new plants from old) from vegetative and root cuttings, layering, division and seed. Basic seed saving information and practical experience is included.  You will take home some newly propagated plants for your own edible garden.
