This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

Join the Australian Democrats President, Lyn Allison and The Hon. Stephen Charles AO, QC, in a discussion on what accountability at the highest levels of Australian Politics actually means. With a Federal CAC in development that has been likened to a toothless tiger and an elected government that hides away at any mention of needing to be held accountable for their actions; the Australian Democrats present this event with the core cry of "Keep the Bastards Honest".

There will be a Questions and Answers segment at the end of the event.

Hosted by Australian Democrats Vice President Elana Mitchell.

The Hon. Stephen Charles AO, QC

Former Judge of the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court of Victoria

Adjunct Professor Master’s Course on the Law of Royal Commissions and other Public Inquiries at Monash University.

His distinguished career in the law spans 3 decades during which he served on several royal commissions including the Westgate Bridge Royal Commission and established education programs in the law. He was president of the Australian Bar Association, Chair of the Steering Committee for Equality of Opportunity for Women at the Victorian Bar amongst other appointments. He is also a very committed supporter of the arts in Australia. He was president of the Australian Law Council

Since retiring from the Court of Appeal in 2006, Justice Charles joined the Accountability Round Table and the Centre for Public Integrity. He has been a strong advocate for the prevention of corruption in the public service, reminding us that ‘Corruption is usually secret, well-hidden, and difficult to discover, expose and investigate.’  Hence the need for an integrity commission with real teeth.
