CPCRE Annual Research Conference 2026
Description
The Centre for Palliative Care Research and Education (CPCRE) is hosting its 24th Annual Research Conference on Friday 9th October at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Education Centre.
The theme for this year’s conference is Dissemination: Sharing Wisdom and will feature Professor Jennifer Tieman from Flinders University, Associate Professor Sharon Latimer from Griffith University and Harpreet Kalsi-Smith, Founder and Managing Director of The Kindness Company, as keynote speakers.
The conference is open to clinicians of all disciplines with an interest in palliative and end-of-life care. Early bird registration is available for a limited time.
Speakers
Professor Jennifer Tieman
Professor Jennifer Tieman is a Matthew Flinders Professor and Director of the Research Centre in Palliative Care, Death and Dying. She leads a series of nationally and internationally recognised palliative care programs which aim to build awareness and capability across the workforce and service providers within the health and aged care sectors. She has a demonstrated capability in delivering national scale activities having successfully delivered grants worth over $80 million in the last ten years. She has a particular interest in the role of digital knowledge and in how online information can support patient, carers and families across ageing, caring, dying and grieving. As Director and Chief Investigator of the CareSearch project, she leads a national palliative care resource supporting health professionals in all settings of care and patients, their families, carers and friends. The project team undertakes research on knowledge retrieval and knowledge dissemination and investigates translation approaches that encourage the use of evidence in health, particularly in palliative care and end of life care. Her work led to the establishment of a specialist bibliometric research group, Flinders Filters. Professor Tieman has an active engagement in aged care. She leads palliAGED an evidence and practice platform for aged care offering palliative care and end of life care resources for the workforce and for services. palliAGED is part of CareSearch's program of work connecting care across the aged and health care sectors and the community. She is Co-Lead of the End of Life Directions of Aged Care (ELDAC) program which offers a Knowledge Hub, toolkits, digital resources, and a national Linkages program for aged care. Between 2022 and 2024 she was the the Director of the Knowledge and Implementation Hub of ARIIA. Associate Professor Sharon Latimer
Associate Professor Sharon Latimer is a Registered Nurse with over 20 years' clinical experience in caring for older patients with medical, dermatological and rehabilitation needs. She commenced at Griffith University in 2009, teaching into the undergraduate Bachelor of Nursing program. Dr Latimer is currently a Principal Research Fellow in the NHMRC CRE Wiser Wound Care group within the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Griffith University. In 2016, Sharon completed her PhD in patient participation in pressure injury prevention. Her other research areas include end-of-life wounds, medication safety, and adult education. She has methodological experience in quantitative (surveys, observations), qualitative (interviews) and mixed methods (meta-synthesis).
Harpreet Kalsi-Smith
Harpreet brings 15 years of experience, specialising in health and wellbeing and in developing creative and innovative projects. She had managed large scale projects initiating strategic change. She has founded Kindness Company to continue supporting those who are approaching the end of their life, along with their communities and to mobilise social change around preparation and support around end of life. Harpreet’s passion to advocate and work in end-of-life care commenced after supporting her mother during her final months of life. Her own lived experience and that of carers and people who have died from a range of illnesses including dementia and cancer has driven her to work for better care for all approaching end of life. Harpreet’s own family’s experience in dispossession of land and country led her to a strong affinity for working with and advocating for First Nations communities. For the past decade she has had the privilege of working alongside First Nations people in her role as Director and Head of Health and Healing with Cox Inall Ridgeway (an Aboriginal Social Change Agency located on the lands of the Eora peoples in Sydney). Harpreet has had several mentors who have guided her development and leadership over many years including Dr Aden Ridgeway, Aunty Lorraine Peeters and Victoria Spence. Problem solving and initiating change has been the focus of her work in the design, implementation and review of new programs, projects and frameworks throughout her career. In terms of palliative care, Harpreet continues to work with First Nations and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities in legacy planning, the completion of end-of-life plans, the development of resources, advocacy, and facilitating deep rest yarning circles. She is a qualified end of life doula and incorporates a range of healing modalities including aromatherapy, reiki and integral sound healing into this work. Harpreet is a consumer representative on the Queensland Palliative Care Clinical Network Steering Committee and for Palliative Care Australia. In 2019 she co-authored the first End-of-life Doula Model of Care and presented this at the Oceanic Palliative Care Conference in 2021.
